I took this picture on one of the Fasching Parades in Offenburg, Germany.
Since 1978, 14 days before Mardi Gras the Offenburg Fasching Parade -so called "Offenburger Narrentag"- takes place.
The parade/Carnival does not only have to do something with disguising, it is a long tradition in the so-called "fifth season".
Up to 19th century carnival was partially forbidden by wars and changing governments. End of the 19th century, many "Narrenzünfte" (fool guilts) were founded
which let the domestic carnival customs revive and became member of the fool guilts.
There are special costumes for Offenburg, as there are for the different regions in the Black Forest area. The costume in this picture symbolizes a witch. This
costume was sketched by Karl and Pauline Vollmer in the early thirties.
The Offenburger witch is the first and oldest witch figure in the Swabian area.
The masks of the witches were made of lime tree and each mask received a personal
characteristic of its carrier, hook nose, pointed chin, etc. Today the masks are not
carved any more after model drafts, however still very different in itself.
From all the pictures that I shot during the parade, I liked this one a lot.
The second time that I had a look at this picture, I realized that the witch
and the man are greeting each other, forming a nice composition. |

You've caught a really nice moment here Zeynep - a really interesting basic composition but I feel there are some things to tidy up at the top of the image and perhaps an argument for a little tighter framing at the sides as well......have a look at the workshop.
An interesting note too for a good illustrative image depicting a decisive moment.
best wishes Kev

Hello Zeynep. For me it is very interesting, as see other Germany. The Karneval is for it a wonderful topic. The photo shows very beautifully the contrast between fools and normally dressed citizens. A beautiful snapshot. Best regards, Wolfgang.
