This is another back view of the Castle of Penela. Besides its nice shape, this side of the castle has also a strange characteristic – The walls are based on a rock that forms a kind of a cave where there are today several benches for visitors to sit enjoying the landscape.
This castle, a mediaeval fortress, as I have already told, has played an important role during the Christion conquest and it was an important part of the Mondego River defensive line. Its construction started in the 11th century and lasted till the 16th, owing to the damages caused by the battles. Today it's quite well preserved
