Hero of the Nation - the solid foundation of growth - the dignified hero beneath the 24 hour lights which keep this city growing - a new skyscaper 'everyday' - certainly not far off - but a man too with the spirit and a smile for the foreigner who takes a sudden interest - his work is dirty and dangerous - it's a time most construction workers in the West wouldn't dream of working to, without triple pay or if it was an emergency, and they probably wouldn't be smiling about it!

His pose and the point of view just instantly made me think of the bold images of propaganda posters - but here rather than the pose we genuinely have the man.

Hi Kev,

Yes the power in China is the man power behind it. They work day and night with very low pay just by hoping they get paid to support their family disregards of the nature of the job. It is very tough to imagine how you would have to compete with millions of others for a singloe vacancy. All they need is overnight rice to keep them going.

I love the selection of your lens and the composition here. The lighting is very well control. With f/1.8 and yet you manage to controil the output at its best DOF is certainly not easy.

Excellent Work.

Adam

Hi Kev.
Let me see if I understood:
-You have the compo;
-You have the light;
-You have the pose;
-You have the smile;
-You have the man;
-You forgot the feet!

I like it anyway!
Best wishes,
Márcio Costa

It is a great happy smile and a strong body language for an economy does not stop growing, even if they want to slow it down a bit. The light on your picture is superb as it is the sharpness and the color. However, I have a little minor observation which is that I would prefer to see the guy’s feet. Well done.
Antonio

This a glorious portrait, Kev - I love your street work in the heoic vein like this. I wasn't completely convinced by the rather complex stage stuff you uploaded lately bt here you score big in my view. Excellent work - fine note (shortish by your standards...;o))

It really looks like a photo from a commercial or a job ad on the human resources pages :)
Really good capture of the moment..
Thanks for sharing,
Alper Ayhan

What a magnificent capture Kev! Heroic is not only his posture but above all the light in which he is bathing. This is surely one of the best light I ever seen recorded in a night shot. Can you please share more details on this (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)? A great photograph.

It's the first thing I thought of when I saw this photo...it definetly looks like one of the famous propaganda photos...but this one is real life! A great shot and a great pose. Very well done.

Kev, that's EXACTLY what was passing through my mind - a propaganda poster! For the chinese goverment, of course! "Look how strong, fit, proud with good posture..." Heck, the chinese goverment should pay ya for this shot!
:)
Great take, Kev, one of your best portraits!

Hi Kev,

I agree with previous writer Márcio, a pity for the feets, but this is an detail, you took this picture very low, this give a good composition, the smile of the man is very nice.

Have a nice day,
John.

Ah yes, Kev, this is the kind of angle we were raised at school with... heroes shot from below, with sky being the limit! And this one fits that bill so well, with the deliberate posing, the overwhelming joy of the working class! World's photographers, unite! ;)
Great one. I would have loved to see his shoes too, but it's a minor detail.
Bye my friend,
sasa

Very good one Kev, I like the light...really nice for this kind of Photography.

Hi Kev.

Ypow......I was curious in the thumb about this light. It looks like a painting...or a propaganda poster:) The colors are absolutely amazing. Its the light Kev, you hit the jackpot

morning kev,
"propaganda" is the right word, i studied at the university named "wincenty pstrowski", a coal miner, leader of the socialistic times, fulfilling 300% of the plans, and all this bullsh&%...i still have in mind the posters with men like the one on the photo, less smile and instead more gravety, power and so on...
--------
love this work here, the man has this hero-of-the-peoples pose all right but that friendly smile neautralizes this completely, making the man look proudly rather, and welcoming...
bravo,
j.
setting off to wroclaw in an hour or so

Hi Kev,
Oh yes, I think he has learned that posture from those posters. But smile is genuine. Background with all the stuff and matching colours is perfect.
Kari

I have a book here at home (so you will have the chance to see it soon) edited by Taschen about the propaganda posters and bilboard during the Mao times. This photo collect this spirit but this time what achieve on me is to think about what is going to happen next in China? Why? Because to developpe a country is great but, happily, it comes with the necessity of grow as a person... Great control of light and so on, but the important point for me is another one.

I see you soon.

Great shot Kev, good perspective and composition. I love the man's expression.
Greetings, Sonia

Haha yes, propoganda posters. Exactly the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this. You've done well to capture this happy side of the normally grumpy looking construction worker.

Hi Kev, good to see your still going strong! i love the light balance in this shot, so natural but bright enough to add definition, i love the results you get with your camera!
Nick

They could mold a communist propaganda figure out of it. But your picture has it: good compo, good illumination, splendid face and sharpness, and appropriate oolours.
Excellent work.
Marc

Hi Kev, i'm really impressed by the quality ofthis picture, for it's technical aspects first .. no surprise to see a canon 5D for that realization, incredible the precision of colors, light and shadow ... Very good portrait that yes seems like old propaganda :))

Congratulations for this shot and all the others you posted
