| This is the crater of Mt. St. Helens. The pointed piece of basalt that you see in the top section of the vent is pushing out from beneath the volcano's floor, and as it surfaces it also pushes out more basaltic rock that is seen here steaming beside and behind it. When the rock surfaced one day as I was set up on the trail just before reaching Johnston's Ridge Observatory, the entire dome was covered with hot rocks as a large steam and gas plume emerged from the crater. What a rush! |

Hello Steven. I can imagine what it feels to be so close to such natural event. Your picture truly shows a good scene of this interesting volcanic activity. Good angle and perspective to capture this picture.
