| At 9:12am on April 16, 1947 the French registered 441 foot (134m) freighter SS Grand Camp carrying 17,000,000 lbs of ammonium nitrate exploded while docked at Texas City, Texas killing 576 and injuring 5,000 more. This anchor weighing 10,640 lbs was found buried 1/2 mile from the blast site. Texas City is located 40 miles South of Houston and 10 miles NE of Galveston. |
