Very laudable Elaine, I usually do, partly for all sorts of reasons, mainly selfish, though partly because it's sometimes hard to get people back to being natural again (though Kaj manages it brilliantly). I think you've made the right decision anyway here, hard to imagine this pose if he knew you were shooting him.
BTW, I've got a couple to post this week where I did what you usually do.

Hi Elaine,
The lighting here is lovely - I like the fact that the saddhu's face is in shadow and the light, blurred background of the river. The fast exposure has resulted in an interesting shape to the falling water. Above all though I like the composition of the body shape and the position of the falling water which seem to convey the spiritual nature of his actions. So perhaps the subject too would have been happy with what you captured, even if you felt it was 'sneaky'.

Thats amazing and very great. The daily morning ritual of 'Surya Namaskar' or praying to the sun god is perfomed across rivers and household all over India. the colours and feel are so earthly and the lone figure holding the urn of water is well caught in the action. Nice expressive and very Indian shot thats been well captured.
It's a striking pose and made dramatic by the beautifully exposed vertical flow of water. It has a feeling of spirituality about it.
I am glad you have some feeling of concern about the morality of what I have called in the past 'stolen images'. The problem is that most pictures lose their spontaneity if the subject knows that they are being pictured. So, often we have to steal. However, I have occasionally – and only when I have been real in doubt- consulted the subject after I have taken the picture, offering to delete it if requires. Some people on TE get very angry when this subject is broached. Recently a picture of a woman and an older man on a beach was posted. The text identified her as a prostitute. I was outraged, but others were angry in its defense. In general, however, I feel that people doing things in public places can be photographed, so long as the picture does not show them in a shameful or insulting situation, or the accompanying text does not make any such reference. Your sahdu would not be at all ashamed of what he is doing, so I feel you have not crossed any line. Many TE members, however, would not agree that there is any line at all . regards kevin

Hi.
I really like this one....the color of the watter is very impressive, excellent effect of the dof too.
Good utilisation of this line of water on the center and nice managed light on the man.
Great one

Hi Elaine
Nice comp and colors. Very sharp with good detail. You have captured an intimate moment here. Great job freezing the water. I like the vertical comp. Well done.

Yes why not sneaky portraits Elaine, this has been very nicely captured... Not easy the vertical frame with only one person inside, nice job...
Kindly
Yan
