Photographer’s Note

Coming off the highway, on the way to Kudat, we stopped for a lunch break and a little tour,at a Rungus Longhouse called Bavanggazo. Bavanggazo is Rungus for "Big River". Rungus is one of the ethnic races belonging to the Kadazandusun family.

It was around noon, and no one was around the handicraft stall, which is located in front of the longhouse. We went into the stall for a look see, browsing for momentos. Like any other handicraft stalls in Sabah, it is packed with rainforest resourced handmade crafts.

My friend, Daniel, picked up something looking like a flute. Thinking it was a run of the mill flute, he placed the mouthpiece between his lips and started "fluting" around with it, like Peter Pan would.

A moment later, an old Rungus lady, probably hearing the flute's, walked in. Daniel gave her back the flute. I don't know why but I asked the lady how to play the bamboo flute. She wiped dry the mouthpiece with her cloth and placed it below her nostrils. The sound coming out of the noseflute was way way melodious than what Daniel had done with his mouth. Daniel didn't know he was mouthing the old lady's personal noseflute.

I quietly followed Daniel outside. So were the rest of my friends, trying very very hard not to laugh.Pretty embarassing. Outside we didn't find Daniel and went looking for him.

We found him behind the stall's wall. Seeing him, we exploded. We couldn't hold it anymore when we saw Daniel, making a scrapping/clawing expressions on his tongue and mouth with his hands.

Daniel didn't feel like having lunch that day.
