Fortress Ivangorod was founded in 1492 by Great Prince of Moscow Ivan III. Ivangorod means "city of Ivan". Thing that makes this fortess unusual is its location. It was built on the shore of river Narova, right opposite of Livonian Knights (Sword-bearers Order)castle Narva. Distance between German and Russian strongholds just 130 meters, and for a hundreds of years lot of conflicts happened between two cities.
Now both fortresses are still there, and now stands on the border between Russia and European Union.
On the photo is the western wall of old part of Ivangorod, named "The Castle", POV in a courtyard.
Tourists on the walls are looking at Narva (and EU) through the ambrasures, and on the other side another tourists are looking back (at Russia) from the walls of their own stronghold. Feelings are weird. Well, sometimes people starting to wave their hands to each other...
How it looks from the other side? Please look at this great photo (not mine, so I freely saying that it's great): Ivangorod |
