This was taken in the vast tidal flats south of Vancouver, near the mouth of the Fraser River. The Fraser has deposited a lot of silt there, which has formed into low islands with a lot of water in and around - a great environment for birds. This area is a major stop on the migration routes down the west coast of North America. There are a few bird sanctuaries in this area which are great places for spotting the many birds that come through the area, as well as the year round residents.

I like this shot because I was lucky enough to catch the birds just when they would be visible against the light, and the way the dark clouds on the right seemed to represent winter coming.

I would like to thank all of the people who commented and critiqued my last post, which was my 300th on TE. I appreciate all the kind words and congratulations that were offered, although I'm not sure I deserve them. I'm just on here trying to improve like everyone else (and have some fun too!). Thanks everyone!

Hi Alvin,

Great colour toning and lighting on thiis picture. Very good composition and POV. Thank you for sharing.

Adam

Hi Alvin

Dramatic colours on this pictures.
Very good sunset lighting and good catch of the birds flying to the sun and way from the dark clouds

Well done

The decaying tree stump and grass works very well with the dramitic sky and birds, note and photo compliment each other. A small portion of the sky seems a little overexposed, but this also works very well with the clouds. I always have trouble with this type of sky, and on occasion has captured a photo that I felt was good under similar conditions. Rodney

Nice shot Alvin;

Superb detail all-'round thanks to the high f/stop. A perfectly level horizon which is so vital for shots such as this. Nice tonal levels which really help to make the long grass stand out against the dark driftwood. The birds in the shot are the icing on the cake in my opinion.

So good- I'd almost think you used a Canon! ;-P

A fine photograph Alvin.
The sky has nice contrast and rich in color.
There is little transition differential if I can call it that, between the sea and the border of the coast. I imagine you blended dif. exposures and that could be the cause. You should add a touch more contrast to the FG to match the sky contrast or take out contrast and add a touch or darkness instead either way it will work.
Composition wise I don't see flaws, the birds really work well on this photo, without them there would be something missing.
Cheers,
Emmanuel

Alvin,
I was browsing this morning and I came across your fabulous images and I immediately chose you as one of my favorite photographers. I love this photo. It is a great environmental wildlife shot. Even though the birds take up only a tiny portion of the composition, everyone knows that this is all about the birds and their habitat. Very clever compostition. That 17-55mm is a killer lens. I use it for low light indoor dance photography. Great Job!

Beautiful composition Alvin. Almost looks surreal. I might get some Singh Ray filters.

Regards

Jeff

Hi Alvin,
This is a superb shot - the POV is perfect by design and then enhanced by what appears to have been a very opportune fly-by! Great colors and perfect clerity. Excellent work and thanks for sharing. Gerald

Light, DOF, POV, angle, colors, subjects are perfect. Another great shot Alvin.

Hey Alvin! This shot is OK if you happen to be into perfect light, foreground use, sky, depth and DOF. Lucky for you and me I'm into that! ;) Seriously though this is a perfect shot and I'll say congrats and tfs! Oh btw happy #301!

Hello Alvin,
What a beautiful and strange picture you have here…
I wonder if the filter helped so much to create this very special mood. The colors are superb but I think the light is what I like most in this exceptional photo.
Thank you,
Nelu

Hi Alvin,
Apart from the excellent landscape what catches the eye is the neat row of birds that you have captured, that IMO breathes life into the photo.

Bonjour Alvin,
Superbe shot ! Je ne regrette pas d'avoir cliqué sur la vignette qui ne donne vraiment pas la valeur de ce que l'on découvre dans une plus grande taille. Bravo.

Witaj Alvin!
Interesting composition. Good colors and super light. The birds make impression. Good work.

Krzysztof

Excellent, Alvin. I love everything about it.. composition, light, the birds to the left - it's "all good!" Regards, Doug P.S. I can hardly wait until it warms up a bit and the green's & blue's come out in the water in the National Park.. You are correct sir! :)

Hi Alvin,

This is one of my favourite kinds of photo, it represents one of those beautiful calm moments when you are out with your camera enjoying your surroundings. The composition is great with the tree stump in the foreground and the details and colour are superb.

Best regards,
Paul.

Hi Alvin,
Well composed in very fine light. I like the treatment of the foreground grasses. I would perhaps have placed the stump a little more to the right, but that is personal preference and given the nature of the flat landscape your decision is more technically correct. The birds indeed are captured in the perfect quadrant of the sky for balance and discernment. There are many fine subtle features in this photo, Alvin. Great work.
John

Surreal image, the handling of the light and POV is outstanding - TFS :)

Alvin,
Brilliant!! :) The background is super photogenic - and a great moment with those passing birds - but for me it's the foreground detail which makes the photo - those grasses look great - perfect light and detail - (yet) another super shot. (To all appearances, you've really settled into that D200 thing!)
Regards
Colin

Hi Alvin,
A nice entry in your "luminous darkness" series, your framing is just right to get a balance between the rising driftwood and the flying birds.
Have a nice day
Jean-Yves

Hi alvin

Hi Alvin,

A simple picture but great from colours, very well composition you chose a nice vertical frame, this gives a very attractive picture.

Have a nice weekend,
John.

Hi ALvin, great one!
thel ight is amazing as the dramatic tones!
and as a cherry on the cake...the birds are the final great touch!
wonderful image!
ciao!

Hi Alvin!

A major realisation in your portfolio. What a striking image, with a superb foreground, amazingingly beautiful light and great contrasts. It looks almost like a painting, with highlight at the best selected spots. The dramatic clouds, the birdsm the sunset, everything is impeccable.

Gorgeous vertical landscape. Exceptional!

André

I like the composition a lot here, Alvin, along with the color scheme. Both are very cold, stark and wintry, even though winter isn't making a strong outward showing in the form of a lot of ice and snow. I guess it's the loneliness of that pillar of driftwood, pointing towards the big sky, trying to look strong but succumbing to the grasses. Well done as always. Regards, Ken.

Hi Alvin,
The birds flying they are outlined with many beauty on this impressive sky, with a light, a few clouds and a few really fantastic colors.
The tones of the water and of the landscape illuminated by the very low Sun are very agreeable, and contrast elegantly with the shades.
I like the trunk and the dry grass in foreground, that attract our look but without concealing the beauty of the landscape that they have behind.
Beautiful shot!
Best regards,
Josep

This is an excellent shot Alvin. The composition and lighting are both gorgeous, and then to top it all off you have those geese flying by. It's almost as if this photo was meant to be. You have managed the lighting very well here. Bravo!
Ryan

Hi Alvin,

Hi Alvin,
While the two wings of birds gives an excellent focal interest, what really makes the photo is the excellent detail of the foreground and the morning cloud and light show. However, capturing such nicely framed groups is clearly a difficult task so I guess it takes both to make the photo special. HLj, pat

Hello Alvin,

What an amazing shot with such great lighting, amazing colours and beautiful details. The birds came around at the right time and sure add to this photo. Excellent shot in every way, Alvin! I love it!

Greetings,

...and giving us some fun watching your photos...like this one.

The perfect timing and composition. The frame is nicely filled from bottom right with the grass and dead tree pointing the the sky and the birds in the upper portion of the frame. The sky is also spectacular.

The exposure is spot on as is the use of the ND grad.

PS: The congratulations you have received are well deserved!
