Still in Pashupatinath, the day of Maha Shivaratri, the big annual Shiva festival that I was describing in my previous post. I finally was able to get out of the compact crowd gathered around the sadhus on the other side of the river, looking for a more quiet place to relax a bit. I found what was maybe the only one around, on the ghats, near a wonderful sculpture of Lord Vishnu lying on a bed of snakes.

Vishnu is the lord of preservation. He performs the cosmic function of cohesion. The constructive nature of his cosmic function stands out in contrast against the destructive dispersive power of Shiva. Vishnu's function is to ensure the sustenance of the universe that Brahma has created. He represents the cosmic cause of existence and the symbolization of eternal life which keeps the universe as one.

Exactly what I was needing at that time, after a full immersion within a sea of Shiva devotees!

Note: I post in a workshop a different POV giving a better unsderstanding of the surroundings.

Hi Vincent,

Nice shot. Very good colours and contrast in the background (good use of the DOF) accentuating the starkness of the subject.

Informative note too.

Cheers,
Guru

Hello Vincent,

Hi Vincent

Good, shallow dof, with excellent fg sharpness on the painted wooden sculpture. The horizontal format was a good choice. I took a couple of shots at Pashuputinath too. TfS!

ce qui est puissant ici , c'est que les couleurs de la tatue sont reproduitent dans le fond flou, cela crée une veritable harmonie,

Hi Vincent!

This is an excellent, colourful picture with a great composition! What really makes the diference here is the perfect depth of field! Excellent choice, my friend! Congratulations!

Salut Vincent,

Very interesting and beautiful.

The pov doesn't seem much imaginative at first, but maybe it has the great advantage of taking profit of the unusual fact of the statue being laid down.

Colours and sharpness are great and the dof is nearly perfect - I say "nearly" because I would prefer having a bit more of focus on the fg, but I guess that would be difficult to achieve and I that you and others prefer it like it is.

That blurred bg makes a nice backdrop with its pattern of colours and shapes.

Amicalement, José.

Hi Vincent,
Excellent work from Pashupatinath. Love the way you have captured the idol, but the best thing IMO is the background with the shallow DOF and the reflections.

Bonjour Vincent

Amicalement,
Marilyn

Hello Vincent
A very interesting picture. Is the statue of Vishnu in a lying state? Looks like because there's some evidence of a waterbody below the statue. Fine use of DOF here with the colours smeared on the statue standing out
Regards
Angshu

Salut Vincent,
D'abord j'apprecie la superbe luminosite dans cette image, et le rendu riche des tons rouges, l'ouverture combinee au zoom est parfaite pour bien differentier les plans.
Bonne journee,

Hi Vincent,
Very fine lighting, with beautiful hues and tones. Surely this is a unique capture of this cultural object. I like the blurred background here. A very fine educational note. Well done...Demain.
John

Nicely done, Vincent--the jumble of color in the background really sets off the statue, probably because the red-orange tones match so well. Of course the shallow DOF is essential. It must have been a spectacular event! Regards, Ken.

Hi Vincent,
Beautiful picture of Lord Vishnu. The spotted blurred impressions of devotees in the background are giving depth to the scene. The idol is looking great with red Roli and Chandan.
Good contrast and DOF.
Workshop photo is also great and represents full mood of the scene.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Vincent. An excellent example of creative photography - I think mnost people would have just shot what you have in the workshop and not seen this even better photo opportunity. Without wishing to take anything away from what is an excellent photograph, I think this could have been even further improved if you had shot this at f6.3 or maybe f8 as that should have brought all of the foreground into sharp focus whilst leaving your background nicely out of focus. When shooting compositions like this I usually try at least five different aperture settings so I can choose the best when I get home. Otherwise this is a technically excellent photograph and very well composed. Cheers . . . David
