Formerly known as Benares and Kashi, the city of Varanasi is the oldest and most sacred city in India, and is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Hindu legend has it that Varanasi is the center of the universe, the first city created by the gods on Earth. Mark Twain after visiting Varanasi had this to say, "Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together."
It is the Ghats of Varanasi that complement the concept of divinity. Ghats are wide stone steps leading down to the river where people can take a holy dip. But there are more to these Ghats than just bathing and cremating. Ghats of Ganges are perhaps the holiest spots of Varanasi. Almost always full of pilgrims the ghats offer a panoramic view of the various early morning activities - from ablution to workout - of a multitude of people, for whom the river is the be all and end all of life. It's also a pleasure to walk down the entire stretch of the Ghats along the Ganges. Here people consult the astrologers under their palm leaf parasols, buy offerings for rituals, sell silk apparels and brassware, or just gaze at the faraway horizon where the mighty river meets the heavens.
Viewing the Ghats from a boat on the Ganges, especially at sunrise, is an unforgettable experience! This picture is from one such boatride and the light was particularly good on this occasion.

The light as you say is superb, and there seems to be a buzz of activities on the ghat. Daily life very different from what we see in our part of the world.

The colourful dresses of the women sitting on the stairs create a lovely patchwork which catches the eye. Excellent point of view and definition.
Thabks for sharing

Lovely colors of the exotic clothes that these pilgrims wear, Sabyasachi, enhanced by your work. Dynamic shot too, with the activities we can see here. Regards, Daniel

Rich and vivid colors. Fine light Background that almost melt with skin of people, and above all great passion that is build into this photo radiate from it.
Nice, really nice work

Regards Darko

Hi Sabyasachi,
I think the clothing of these people was bright and eye-catching enough without resorting to the partial desaturation you employed here. Sorry, I know I always pounce on you when you post these kinds of shots, it's just that I find them a bit gimmicky. All down to personal taste I suppose.
I think this image was strong enough as it is, and the PP was rather unnecessary in my opinion.

Cheers,
Ben

Beautiful culture photo! Great colors and compo. The man in white is very evidence between the rest of the photo.

This appears almost as a painting, not only in the colours and delicate lighting, but also in the way the characters are posing. I would say this has almost a magical quality! Top notch work - congratulations on a wonderful capture!

Magnificent compo and colors. Those people are incredibly picturesque. Fantastic capture. Their colorful clothes, the stairs with that inscription, their expressions--all are very, very good.

Excellent shot of this ritual. What I find most appealing about it is the two lines of people making a triangle. The Indian love of colour is also well demonstrated here with every hue in their clothing.

Olá Sabyasachi, I imagine that it must be an unforgettable experience. Unfortunately Varanasi was too far away for me, but the activities on the ghats was one of the things that most attracted and impressed me in India. The atmosphere is fantastic and allways so colorful. Good capture of this scene. I actually hadn't noticed the partial desaturation if it wasn't Ben. It doesn't disturb me, but now I'm curious about the original image.
Best wishes,

Sabyasachi: more great compositions from your files. This one is fine, but perhaps the saturation is a little steep here - just a thought. I'm leaning towards less saturation for lifelike seens. Sometimes selective saturation is best, c

Dear Sabyasachi
The subtle desaturation in the BG works well here. Yes the colours are the key here & there is a lot of activity visible on the ghats...perhaps a bit too much to concentrate...makes this a very busy composition. But then that's what you expect in Benaras ghats, busy & bustling with activity. The morning light was really very sweet.
Best wishes

Indeed a remarkable light, the desaturated bg makes the colourful fabrics stand out, I wonder if a little bit of the Ganges water could be included at the bottom, also I have mixed feelings about the half face at the bottom right, he could perhaps be cropped out. I may be going there in late October of this year, it looks super exotic and full of culture

Sabyasachi,

Your images are very impressive. Very colorful and full of endless stories. India has always fascinated me and seeing your images and the stories inside make me want to visit very badly. I look forward to seeing more from you.

This image, like your others, tells a great story. Why are all these people here at this particular time? Great composition and perfect exposure.
