The Katoomba Falls and Cascades are just down the road a small piece from Echo Point. You enter through a small park across from a trailer park off Cliff Road. I went there to have a look at the Katoomba Cascades. No shot was really planned, I was just scouting. I took a couple of shots anyway, but wasn’t really happy with the way they turned out. I’ll be back yet again. The shot before you now was actually looking downstream from the Katoomba Cascades so all that was left in this stream are the Katoomba Ripples. I didn’t have my tripod (I’ve got a million excuses, none of which would pass muster here though). In any case I took this shot by propping my camera up on a stepping stone with my hat to support the lens. I took a couple of shots like this to capture what I wanted.
This is an amazing spot within the Blue Mountains. A few hundred metres from here it was hot and dry. Here it was cool and you can see by the fern growth that humidity isn’t a problem.
Workflow was as follows:
This was shot in jpeg (I didn’t have my software for Raw for another couple of weeks)
It was converted to tiff
I didn’t need to touch levels
I adjusted curves very slightly on the colour side, and applied a very slight S-curve on the RGB to give me some more contrast
I saved the tiff
For this posting I cropped (there was a footprint in front of my stone), adjusted image size, and added a frame.
While sharpening I noticed that it lightened and the saturation seemed to increase slightly so I decreased yellow and green by 5 each, and I readjusted my curves very slightly to darken it just a bit.
I sharpened with smart sharpen and saved as a jpeg for the posting. In saving for this post I had to decrease my quality level much more than normal (I’m guessing because of all the detail in the brush etc.). I debated cutting the image size some more but in the end decided to go with what I have here.

good contrast between the red brown river and the green foliage, nice focus.

Original framing. I might use this as I find it is original and pretty. I also like how you contrasted it with the brown at the bottom.

It is a very good shot in spite of the hard conditions. The POV is excellent and the colours are superb. I will be waiting for the cascades pictures.

Hi John. Lovely scene. You have captured excellent detail, seems your tripod works fine from long distance ;-). Nice composition and excellent colour. Thanks for sharing.

this is simply nice. Looks a bit tropical, a lot of green, the creek reflecting the light but also showing its ground and warm colours. The amount of plants is visible by your clear sharpness and contrast. The green frame outside is not my favourite.

No need for excuses, this photo is splendid. Light between tree branches is tricky, but still shadows and highlights are well in control. I like how shallow water shows the bottom of the stream.

Beautiful light compliments all the lush green plants as they reflect so peacefully in the golden creek bed. The frame is perfect for this beauty.

Hi John. You have a talent for these photos of Australian bush scenery for sure. The colours and ambiance shine through this presentation. The cropping is good and the frame suits the composition well. Keep these coming, you may be able to publish a book of these one day. TFS. Murray.

Well composed with superb lighting and shadow effects. I like the clarity of detail and overall quality of this photo. It is often difficult to capture forest scenes, especially with digital, and here the brownish stream bottom nicely contrasts with the greenery. Your PP work was well managed. Thanks for the fine note. First rate work, John. Cheers.

Beautiful shot, John. Perfect composition, although it looks like you may have got your feet wet in creating it. Well done!

Very nice picture! It isn't easy to manage lights inside the bush, but yours is very well equalized. Well done! The POV from inside the river, giving it's way to the eyes is also great! Otherwise, at least for my sense, the green frame creates a competition to the green from the bush, and from the colours everywhere. I believe that the frame's colour should be always neutral, to exalt the subject in the picture, or paint.
Anyway, I like your picture a lot!

First of all thanks you very much for your more then helpful note. It’s really very important to learn new skills and understand how such a great photos come to life. Composition and POV are just perfect. In my opinion image is a little bit too bright, but from other hand it shows details perfectly. And one more thing, I’m not quite like the frame. It looks a little bit too fancy, but it’s all about personal preferences really.
Thanks for another great short.

Hello John. Looks like a very nice place for hiking. The water is so clear and fresh with thick foliage on both sides looking like our tropical forest here. You are lucky to be able to come to a place like this and taking pictures. The light passing through at the far end makes excellent contrast to this pristine image. Looks very clean and thanks for sharing. Well done and keep rocking with Mark. Best regards. Jusni

Great shot! Loks beautiful. The green colours and the reflections of the blue sky in the water, along with the patches of reddish brown, all create a harmony of colours which appears to be very pleasing. Only the white portion of the sky seems a bit too bright to go along with the beautiful scenery. ANywaysm excellent work! Thanks for sharing.
