This is the memorial to five Polish airmen who died on Buckden Pike after their plane crashed in a blizzard on a training mission in 1942. But there was one survivor, and, with a broken leg, he amazingly found his way off the mountain by following the footprints of a fox, which he had guessed would also be making it's way down to a safer place.

The trail led him to the village of Cray where he was given shelter - if he'd gone the other way from the plane he would certainly have perished in the blizzard.

The memorial has some pieces from the aircraft embedded in concrete and also features a fox's head in bronze.

I've always found it a fascinating and moving story - for full details do visit the website, which is run by the survivor's son, at www.buckdenpike.co.uk

Hi Leon,
Nice composition with this monument and great light from the foreground to the horizon.
Christophe

Hi Leon. Both the perspective and the composition are perfect and the colours and contrast are also good considering the cloud cover. Have you visited Castle Crag in Borrowdale, Cumbria? There's a memorial there, reached after a short walk and even shorter climb for one the best views in the Lakes.

Hi Leon,
Much appropriate dramatic mood to the impressive story behind that memorial. Very clever pov.
Regards, José.

Hi Leon, What a fascinating story & thanks for introdusing the websight that is also interesting, the fells can be a dangerous place for people with two good legs who know the area, so this man surviving in a blizzard with a broken leg is amazing, good old fox, very good composition & focus, superb colour & TFS, kind regards Wilson.

Hi Leon
Posting after a while!! Better a few good ones than many rubbish photos! ;D Here we get a nicely off centered compo, with fine reddish color tones on the dry land...And an interesting story about the Polish airmen...
Have a nice day
Laurent

Very interesting story. It's good to see the poppy wreath which shows the place still gets attention. A well composed image with the memorial on the left. You have excellent depth and a great sky (Grad filter?)

Hi, friend!
I very like your strong colours. Good composition. Good idea. Memorial for polish airmen. It is very interesting for me! I never see this memorial.
Marek

Hi Leon, nice open shot, highlighting how barren this part of the country can be. Perfect composition and the menacing sky is a real bonus. Excellent notes, as always ! Best regards, Roberto

Hi Leon, thanks for drawing my attention to this wonderful story through this well composed picture. it might be a little bit oversaturated, IMHO. the low laying clouds are superb.
Regards, Peter

Hi Leon,

this is a great picture with a great note.
Thanks for that.
I think the light conditions wasn't very easy that day but you have done a grat job. The pic is very well balanced and the composition is very interesting. Also the saturation, contrast and dof are simply perfect.
I hope to have the chance to visit this place.

Take care Leon
Igor

Very moving note and a nice photo of a very bleak place on a winter's day! Nice one - TFS. Paul.

Hi Leon,

I thought I'd critiqued this photo the other day but I think I got side tracked by the link to the Buckden Pike site!! Nice composition and shot with your lens at its widest to give a great feeling of open space, note was really interesting too.

Best regards,
Paul.

Hello Leon,
Very dramatic shot beautifully lit by that interesting sky. Good composition that emphasises the memorial but also puts it in its context. Good definition.

Hi Leon,
Love the distance and the way that the landscape falls into it with a great sense of space. The monument sits well here. Interesting notes. Thanks.
Dougie.

Hi Leon,

A really nice shot. I think it was a good idea with the cross to the left and some of the dramatic sky to the right. Also very nice colours. Personally I would perhaps have taken the photo from a lower POV. Excellent note. Have a nice evening.

Cheers,

Ulf
