A sad shot, and I agree, B&W works well for this. I'm not sure shallow DoF would be an advantage here, certainly it's worth keeping the tree in focus. Anyway, do you have that much control with the Canon, I know I don't with my Ixus, whihch is a very similar camera.

The image stands upon the subject and you spotted and captured this one well. I've elaborated my thoughts on this one in the workshop I posted for you, just to experiment with the various effects. Black and white is very versatile and digital makes it so much more acessible.
Very solid slice of life here Jennifer, unfortunately sombre but real.

The color tones and the old tree creates a really "hard" times feeling. This picture speaks volumes.

The extreme detail and fine contrast makes the black and white work better than color here.
This may be hard to explain, but if I hadn't read your note it looks like a very nice picture of an old gentleman waiting under a tree. And I like it as it is. On the other hand, if you really want a bleak feel to match what you felt while taking the picture, MKING's workshop certainly succeeds at that. And I like that too, in a different way.

I'd try a tighter vertical crop removing all the white highlight path on the right.

You did a good job capturing this picture. The tree itself ads a lot to the picture as it is also looking sad, leaning, and wrinkled with no leaves.. nice shot

Une grande inquiètude semble effectivement habiter cet homme avec une espèce de frisson qu'il tient entre ces bras. Le titre est bien choisi et le B&N me plaît beaucoup. Amicalement/jr

There is something between the old man and the old tree that makes it a good picture. And the black and white quality is outstanding.
