In central Oregon, there are vast lava fields - rough rocks and obsidian everywhere. Just north of sisters, on the south flank of Mt. Jefferson, is a lava field with a great trail along the western edge. The field runs north / south. The trail cuts across the field a bit, but mostly hugs the wall.

My 12 year old boy and I decided to try to walk on the field, rather then in the thick bushes next to it. It was not too successful, as you could easily break a leg there. This little patch is sort of odd too, because the only trees standing are those who've managed to gain a toehold in the lava field themselves - the surrounding forest was wiped out by a forest fire a few years ago.

I know that this image is not really up to trekearth standards - ie - the colors are not rich, and the photo is not spectacular. But - it ***is*** within trekearth's charter to show something you don't see everyday. This, I think is something pretty unique.

This image was cropped & straightened. After resizing I sharpened it a bit. Not much other processing was done.

interesting subject and the colors are fine.

The photo is fine, better than many but the content and note make it very appropiate for TE. I think it is a nice shot.

Hi Rob,
I can't see what you mean by "not really up to trekearth standards". I think it's indeed very lively - at any rate, I've seen many worse. And, as you and others have already mentioned, it's very appropriate. In fact, I would never have thought there was a place like that anywhere in the USA. I've heard of volcanoes there and all that, but for some reason, I've never before seen a photo of an American lava field. And yet, lava fields are nothing new to me, since I live in the country where the lava was invented ;) Anyway, thanks for showing me something "new", it's always a pleasure to discover something beautiful.

Regards,
-Ari
