Tochoji Temple in Fukuoka contains the largest wooden Buddha statue in Japan, of Kannon, goddess of Mercy. It's 11 metres high, & weighs 30 tonnes. It was founded by Kobadaishi after his return from China in 806 ad, and is the oldest Temple in Fukuoka. The graves of several early members of the Kuroda Family (local feudal lords since 1600) are here. (Source: Kyushu.com). Tochoji Temple is adjacent to Gion train station. If it's raining, snowing or just damn hot, like it was when I was there, use the pedestrian subway from Hakata Station to Gion.

he's been taken care off very properly in a Japanese way. Quite another sight than in southern Asia,

With these colours one really get the feel of the Japanese culture and you portrayed it well. I enjoyed the clarity and the good craftmanship of the statue and design at the back. The absence of worshippers allowed me to wander around and appreciate the beauty of the place even more. Well done!! Have a nice day.

It was difficult to avoid distortion in these conditions, but it's okay and the overall light measurement is pleasant, I like the quite typical busy frame in the bottom part and the ever serene Budha topping it all.
Have a nice day,

Amazing wooden Buddha statue. I've never seen one that big even in other contries. I like the wooden tones all around. A very nice shot!

The only pity is the little overexposition. Anyway, I like it.

Hi Chris. That big Buddha does look huge! The portrait orientation was about the only way to go here and made the most sense. It might be nice to be able to see the item on the left in the foreground in its entirety. tfs Chris.

Excellent shot; you have captured the statue very interestingly though it's looks little tilted. The image is very clear. The color/contrast is perfect.

This superb shot of the Buddha statue of Kannon came up in the random order in which you've arranged your Overview Page. It's a powerful depiction, with extraordinary light management. Have a good Sunday.
