The floodlit 'Southern Gate'(Namdaemun) at night, with the highrise of downtown Seoul in the background. It's also known as 'Sungnyemun'

"Sungnyemun is located in the heart of Seoul and is an area with a mix of old and new. There is the historic city gate, used to protect the city from Korean tigers, which have long been gone from the area. Sungnyemun is also called Namdaemun, literally "the southern gate," because it was the southern gate of the original walls surrounding Seoul during the Joseon Dynasty. Currently, Sungnyemun serves as a gateway to Namdaemun market, a traditional twenty-four hour market that has been operating for centuries. The area is also home to several shopping malls.

Sungnyemun is currently the oldest wood-built structure remaining in Seoul. The construction of this gate began in 1395 during the fourth year of the reign of King Taejo of Joseon and was finished in 1398. The remaining structure went through renovation during the reign of King Sejong (1447) and the tenth year of the reign of King Seongjong (1479)." Source:

Hi Chris,
This is a wow...superb handling of light here. Wonderful are the coloured hues of the gate created by the lights against the dark BG dotted with window lights. Beautiful!
Regards
Angshu

Great POV Chris. I like that curve of the grass going up. The enlightment of the gate is incredible. It really stands out with such a strong bright look and it's not overexposed. Good shot!
Cheers,
Ricardo

Hi Chris,
like being itself a floodlight. Great how you managed light here. So I must follow Angshu and Ricardo in each mentioned point.
Wonderful. Extra point!
Cheers, Ulf

Hi Chris.

Excellent light management. Maybe has it a little noise or it just my screen?

Anyway, I like it and the contrast with the building behind it is great.

Wow! This is really beautiful, with the bright colours and the incredible detail of workmanship. The artificial light gives a totally different view of this, and really makes it stand out against the dark sky. Well done!

Bonjour Chris,
Surprenante image nocturne avec cette vue en contre-plongée du temple. L'arrière-plan de hauts buildings apporte de la dimension à la photo.
C'est très bon mom Ami.
Pierre

Interesting to see a nighttime view of this, Chris. I think the time of day makes the gate stand out well against the urban highrises around which are degraded into insignificance. Nice.

Hi Chris,
Wow, an impressive structure.A nice choice to catch it at night with its bright light and vivid colours.A real contrast to the standard concrete architecture in the background.Good composition and placing.Tfs.

Bonjour Chris,
il n'est pas commun de voir se mélanger le traditionnel dans les formes, dans des éclairages modernes. Le résultat est spectaculaire, mais est-il vraiment adapté ?
Sur le plan de la technique de prise de vue, rien à dire, c'est très bon.

Best regards.
Daniel.

Hi Chris. I sure can see why you would want to take a picture of this place at night with the combination of architecture, lighting, and colors. It might have been even better if it was taken during the blue hour. Well done Chris.

Hi Chris

Namdaemun looks really nice at night. There are some good camera shops in that areas as well. Where you shopping?
Ben

Hi Chris,
You show me a square and building that made me nostalgic !

Bonjour, mon ami Chris,
Merci, Chris, de nous trouver de véritables trésors. J'aime ce contraste entre l'ancien et le moderne.
Un grand bravo pour cette superbe réalisation.
Excellente gestion de la lumière.
Amitiés.
Philippe

Hi Chris,
Interesting monument and god result with a nihgt shot, difficult contrast with this strong light and the black background, but here it's well taken.

Hello Chris,
This picture reminds me a constant convcersation I have with a photographer who persists in arguing that digital photography is still a long way from competing with classical slides. As the owner of a huge archive of over fivehundredthousand slides in two formats, and a new collection of at least
2000 GB digital pictures accumulated in the past 4 years, I believe that I am in position to discuss the matter. What I want to say is that altough digital projectors ( Even the heavy ones ) have not reached the degree of perfection of slide projectors ( For many reasons ) digital photography has certainly overcome analog systems, both in quality and perfection and the possibility to get even better ones with short manipulations with software programs. So better be on the train
and catch the last wagon. Slide projectors will eventually be as good as their predecessors and very shortly.
This picture is a good example of how better it could have been if shot with a SRL digital camera. You would have corrected the color, the light, the perspective and many other smaller problems. But there is a chance that you also think like my friend,
and believe that slides have still a long way to go. The only reason I continue to shoot slides from time to time, is because some of my customers prefer them.
As said above I like the gate picture, but I believe that you could have done much better with a digital camera.
Friendly yours - Izzet

Running out of smileys - tomorrow .

This looks so different at night, Chris. The floodlights lose all the intricate colours of the carved wooden roof on top of the gate, but it's interesting to see this from a different perspective. Cheers . . . David

Sadly, this building burned down in February of 2008. Read about it here: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=113127&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15
