Photographer’s Note
5:46am January 1st. The sun rises under a thick blanket of cloud and rain. This point is the eastern most spit of land in New Zealand, and widly regarded as the first place in the world to see the sunrise on a new day. This picture was taken RAW and worked in Photoshop. Levels and cropping were necessary, and a NDF was applied to bring out some contrast in the clouds. Enjoy. Please let me know what you think.

Hi Michael, so this would make you the first person in the world to see the sun in 2007. Cool.
Composition wise I like your shot, with the reeds silhouetted against the lighter background. The sun has an interesting sideways tear shape, helped by the clouds. The reeds in the foreground are moving around a bit with your time exposure I guess, but thats fine. The sun is maybe a bit bright in this one. I'm sure it caused you some problems in dealing with your highlights, but overall its good.
Thanks, John
