looking out the city Photo

Photographer’s Note

there're about 700k people in the Chisinau, although this number may vary. the city is surrounded by many villages, so this is a look to the Jaloveni from within the capital; Jaloveni is a small village neighbouring the city. there are vinegardens between the 2 residential areas.

PS: the photo was taken in the January 01, 2007, still no snow at all, as you can see

PPS: many locations in Moldova resemble to the landscapes shown in some movies of Emir Kusturica who is one of my favourite modern film directors. well, I suppose it is ordinary in all the South Eastern countries

Really nice soft effect - it almost seems symetrical in the shallow valley.

Iaroslav, that's a great take - the sky is perfect to hightlight the snowless ground, and the golden hues on the horizon add a nice touch. You also got an interesting effect by adding movie-like frames on top and bottom, I guess it's related to what you have said in the photographer's note.

Hi Iaroslav,
This is a classic example of an instructive geography lesson — a good, succinct note accompanying an excellent photo. Are the rows of white posts part of a vinyard? Beyond that is the village in somewhat degraded light, as it should be with distance. The overcast, bleak sky suggests a penetrating cold. Excellent shot.

This is a lovely view of the city and the surrounding country-side. I like the way the photo leads us over the grass and vineyards to the crowded city. The depth is good, and I also like that you captured a lone person standing on the left side.

Gorgeous pov! A good example of how deceiving thumbnails can be, as by looking at it I wouldn't expect such wonder.
Very nice capture of the town and its surroundings. Besides all the rest, I like tiny human figure, very well placed compo wise. Nice lighting in a situation that I imagine to be very complicated to manage.

The lines in the image and the folds of the ground and even the light seem to take one's eye to the village. Very nice work Iaroslav.

i like how the farm or the vinyard is at the top going down to the city. good info about this town. the town and sky looks a bit too bright though

Dear Jaroslav,

my best greetings to Moldavia and to you. The nice and technically good pic of this village reminds me of my trip to your country- on a bicycle and on this wonderful reception by many good people. And in Chisinau a yiddishe fiddler sang in the restaurant : "Oi du min scheen Bassarabie", I could have cried then.

Hej Iaroslav!
My knowledge about Moldavia could be better, I suppose Ihave a lot of prejudice about the country. This picture anyhow gives a bit of the flavor you speaking about in Kusturicas films or the film "Gadjo Dilo" by Tony Gatlif.
This Wintergrey grassland in forground with those small white houses with squared brick-roofs makes the picture. maybe you have worked a bit to much with the sky and the distant town, it seems to not co-orperate so good with forground.

Nice perspective through the vineyards leading to the distant city, the light is not the best, but it's an original view, something I've never seen before.
