In Mrauk U it`s worth to get up early to have views like this.
Photo is taken from Schwedaung Pagoda, situated on a hill, the highest point in this area.

Mrauk-U was the capital city of 48 kings for 355 years and was founded by King Mong Saw Mon in 1430. The city offers the visitor many chances to study the cultural and traditional heritage handed down to the present day Rakhine generation by their forefathers. Mrauk U can rightfully be claimed as the “Open-air Museum” of the arts and culture of the people of Rakhine.
The Golden days of this city were between the 16th and 17th centuries and contemporary to the days of the Tudor Kings, the Moghuls, the Ayuthaya Kings and the Ava (Inwa), Taungoo and Hanthawaddy Kings of Myanmar.
The city was well-fortified with 19 mile long fortification walls, moats and natural barriers: the then war-torn Rakhines began to regard it as the “Promised Land”.

Once, more than six million shrines and pagodas flourished and there is rarely a hilltop that does not adorn itself with one pagoda or another.
After the annexation of Arakan (Rakhine) by the British, the capital was shifted to Sittwe (Akyab): since that time Mrauk-U was known by the people as Mrohaung (Old City). The name Mrohaung was given by the British when they shifted their seat of administration to Sittwe in 1826. The original name was restored in 1979.
The city is just 40 miles away by river from Sittwe and the trip takes 3 to 4 hours. There are daily flights to Sittwe from Yangon which take 2 hours via Thandwe. The boat departs from a jetty in the Sattroegya, a tributary creek of the Kaladan river and on the way there are many places of interest to be seen along the river.

stunning work. The LIGHT, its so beautiful. I mean the view is good, its always going to be there but its the light you got, or rather chose, that floods this work with magic. Its like a painting really.

Hi Leo, this is remarkable! The light, the fog, the mysterious golden shrine standing out so well out of the green and fog; what a photo, man!!! congratulations, Daniel

Hi,
Congratulations. Nice composition and colours. This picture looks as it has been taken from the book with fairytales! :-)
Greetings!

Uhau, Andreas, I envy you for beeing in such a fantastic place. The early morning mist really gives a touch of magic and surrealism. What a view! Your composition is just great with a perfect inclusion of that lonely Pagoda. Congratulations!
Merry Christmas and the all the best for you and your family in 2007!
Ricardo

A beautiful scene, with the golden pagoda looming out of the morning mists. The whole scene has a marvellous light, and the palm fronds poking out of the mist look wonderful. A very fine shot, well done.

Lieber Andreas ! This is absolutely magic and goes beyond, and I am so glad you got up to show us this. Wonderful the remaining fog lingering in the palm trees ... feels like being on another planet, in another world ... like a fairy tale. Happy Christmas to you (I guess it is not too late to say this), Barbara.

Hello Andreas,

A wonderful atmosphere, good natural
colours and pov.

Greetings, Hans

Hi Leo. Great point of view and excellent light for this beautiful composition. I like the mood resulting from the fog. Regards, Yvonne

Just admirable view. Could been taken from a fairytail. The golden "tower" sourrended by the misty landscape. To bad they got such a regime that they got. Nice shot.

Oooh it looks magical, the light is here excellent.
My best wishes for 2007

Wow, a wonderful, dreamy picture. I like the warm sunlight hitting the pagoda (?). The palms sticking out of the morning fog add a lot of depth to the image.

Beautiful photo Andreas! Nothing more needs to be said you have got this one PERFECTLY.

Hello Andreas -

What a beautiful image! You are right, getting up early can lead one to marvelous images like this one. I like how the morning light highlight the temple and the fog/mist accentuates the scene and adds an air of mystery. The exposure, composition, DOF, etc, etc are spot on. Excellent image! Well done!

Hello Andréas, more still than a good framing this image releases a nostalgia of this place lost with this exposure or the fog grows more still this impression of loneliness or bathes this splendid building embraced by a shaving luminosity, the way in which you manage to play with these ranges of light and colour is rather extraordinary, it is a splendid image, Merry Christmas and better want

Hello Andreas,
wonderful picture... so full of mystical presence. I like it very much. I've always dreamed about making this kind of photo and never succedded... but last week, nearly at 4.00 PM it happened. I saw solitary trees on the hill, some houses with smoke from the chimney, few layers of hills and all in wonderful low sun backlight... but we were in a hurry to the doctor's visit. The doctor said everything is O.K. but I was without a picture. But only until today... now I put yours in my favourites gallery, so I can look at it everytime I want to ;)))

Happy new year to you and your family.

Astonishing and beautifull in many aspects : the round build, the mountains all around, th clouds or fog covering the valleys, lthe light on the high places... Very good sharpness, too. Thanks for sharing this particular moment.

la photo magique.
On se demande si on admire une photo ou alors une peinture, mais quel que soit le cas, le résultat est fabuleux.

Excellent travail.

Hi Andreas,

A wonderful image with the mysterious atmosphere. This morning fog confers on the landscape a very beautiful softness, it is very pleasant to look at. A perfect management of the light and colors in fact an extraordinary photograph of beauty. Cheer and superb work.

With all my friendships and a very good year 2007.

This photo is absolutely stunning, looks like a painting. The light gave you a 'present', sheding itself the way it did.
Superb landscape.

This place looks so magical with the sun just perfectly lighting up the pagoda and the wispy clouds in amongst the vegetation. Everything looks so harmonious.

Impressive landscape, the fog creates a very interesting atmosphere, good perspective of a high point of view and good composition, without a doubt a magical and full place of mystery. Good Work!

Hi Leo, already seen it almost 10 times this picture ... At least.
A TREMENDOUS PICTURE, surely the best ever post from of myanmar of those temples.
Considering the large amount of pictures posted from that kind, this is a true compliment.
All my congratulations, you deserve at least 300 points for that stuff

wow, this is amazing. What a place and a greta capture. thankyou very much for showing this place. Good work.

Rob

I don't exaggerate when I say this is my favorite photo from Trekearth so far. I find the shape of Burmese pagodas so alluring to begin with, and this is placed in a magical context. You have perfectly exposed the misty surrounds and they are highly evocative of mystery and mystique. Then there is the beautiful contrast of green on the deep rust colored pagoda and earth. Delightful, thank you for making the effort.

fast wollte ich sagen, das kenne ich, aber es ist ja gar nicht bagan ! eine wahnsinnig stimmungsvolle aufnahme ! toll

Wow, I thought you could only get shots like this in Bagan, Leo. I haven't been to Mrauk U yet, but this photograph has convinced me that I must combine it with my next trip to Bagan. Beautiful light and mood, wonderful depth and feel - this is an image that I would be very proud to have in my gallery. Cheers . . . David

Amazing shot full of mystery and fantasy. I love the crisp light on the temple. Also the masses of space around the temple and these areas' amazing misty covering.

Hi Andreas
One of the most beautiful shot on TE. Beautiful view and good timing to be there at that time.
greetings Albrecht

I can't imagine what it feels like to see this scenery "for real" but I am pretty certain it must be overwhelming. This place looks so mysterious and inviting at the same time! It could also well be a painting...

Hello Andreas,

How can I critique such a picture if all I can use are some words and a smiley? I bet everyone would dream about taking such a photo!
The composition is excellent! You placed the pagoda in one of the strongest point of the picture and the warm sunrise light falls in the same place! The mists in the valleys create a great, mysterious atmosphere. It seems that every detail is a witness of the century long history in those places!
The distribution of the color saturation also favors the pagoda and the area around it! Sorry I can only award you two points! Very well done! Thank you!

With Friendly Regards,
Eddie

Hallo Andreas,
ein wunderschönes Foto,es stimmt einfach alles!
Super!
-Dimitris-

OMG this picture is just completely stunning! It looks just so unreal! So magical! Good job! A GREAT capture!!!

Your Myanmar shots are stunning. It seem that the country inspired you to raise your photography to another level. The clouds/mist in this shot add a lot of mood but the lighting on the actual stupa itself helps to just pick it out in the busy frame. GREAT!

PHIL

Hello Leo,

I enthusiastically join the chorus of admirers of this remarkable shot. The composition and perspective, the interplay of light and shadow, and the colors and definition are spectacular. The amorphos quality of the fog serves as a counterpoint to the well define image of the temple complex. This is a surreal image, but the note is informative enough to make it real.

Well done,

Bulent

This is so beautiful Leo,¨that it is hard to believe it is real. I was also at Bagan some 10 years ago¨but was not able to capture this kind of unreal beauty. May be I should include Mrauk U in my next Myanmara expedition.
Congratulations = Izzet
