Photographer’s Note
Another capture from the huge protest against alleged electoral fraud in Mexico City this summer. For more details about the event see here and here.
The tent city erected by the protestors stretched for 12 kilometres along the Reforma, one of the city's busiest streets, in the heart of the business centre, barring all traffic and bringing everything to a virtual halt.
One long stretch of the Reforma is lined on either side with large, free-standing frames fronted in plexiglass that I imagine normally hold advertisements. During the protest every single one (dozens of them... there is another example in the WS) held images of earlier protests. Here several passers-by stop to examine one photo-montage.
I never quite got a perfect shot of these things, but this one's not bad and to me it gives a compact capsule view of the events that were going on all around me as I walked up and down the tent city, every day, all day, talking to people and taking photographs.
The image on the upper left, by the way, is quite typical of the size of crowd that Sr. Lopez Obrador, the leader of the party organizing the protests, could command when he spoke. Nonetheless, I got the very clear sense that these people are not his "followers," as the media often call them. Whether right or wrong in their cause, every person I spoke to clearly thought about the issues and examined the evidence and made up their own mind rather than following any party line. In a very real way Lopez Obrador follows them as they lead themselves.

12km! That is a loing stretch of protestors!
You take long absences from here, but you leave a nice feeling behind when you have been...
Perhaps not the most eyecatching composition Lee, but the subject and details are worth a second and third look.
I think it might have been nice to include the rest of that lady;s bag instead of the smaller posters on the other side...

for me these images of the pannel (as well as YOUR pictures) are a tribute to photography, to photojournalism, Lee, and, of course, a tribute to people´s courage.
in the beginning i considered that having everything in color (real people and the people in the images) would be confusing but now i think this is quite positive because of the game between real people and the people depicted - who are real as well.
great note.
