Photographer’s Note
This photo was taken in the Mentawai Islands. I'd just finished surfing and was sitting on deck of our boat watching as another group of surfers had their fill. The guy in the forground is one of the many hawkers who ply their wares to visiting surfers from canoes. There is almost no other tourism in this region due to the remote nature of the place: to get here you need to charter a boat from the nearby mainland port of padang (itself a difficult place to get to) and then brave a voyage out with a sometimes questionable vessel and crew through the island chain on the edge of the Indian Ocean.

Lovely shot and lovely note.... in a way I am more than happy to hear you describe how difficult it is to get there... and I hope it shall remain so for a little eternity :D
You've really managed to capture two world perfectly here: our western surfing with a whole different set of beliefs and traditions. It almost looks like two different planets meeting without neither of them ever really meeting in a deeper sense of the terms.
Excellent shot, excellent capture and brilliant contribution to this site!
Thank You!
