Photographer’s Note
Silohette of statue along the old San Juan wall between the harbor and Fort El Morro. The statue represents the Bishop of San Juan and three women bearing torches. It commemorates a religious procession held in the city during the British siege of 1797. According to legend, a torch-lit procession and the simultaneous ringing of church bells tricked the British (8000 troops and a 50 vessel flotilla) into believing that reinforcements were flooding into the city. Fearful of being outnumbered, the British gave up their siege.
