Photographer’s Note
poverty exists and i know that all of you know about the situation, but most of you are not AWARE about it. unless you actually witness it in real you won't be able to that that it really exists. i agree with amartya sen ,who in his nobel winning study wrote that " the essence of poverty lies in the lack of opportunities".
i'm saying this with so much conviction because , you and i are here posting photographs ,coz we have the opportunity to do so. millions of people don't have the opportunity to education, food, clothing and shelter. so we should be grateful for what we have. this particular photograph was taken in a place called connaught place in new delhi. this pair of father and daughter have made this market place their home. i see them begging everytime i go there. i'm posting this photograph here coz i know that most of you will feel the agony. this sight is so common in india and the other developing nations that their citizens have become quite immune to it. the main focus of this pic is on the girl.i've purposely tried to make the photograph dark .didnt want to bring in all her features, just wanted to capture a kind of a silhouette and her eyes. you should look at other things as well. notice the frail body of her father ,notice the ribs which are visible coz of not being able to eat. notice the talisman and the shawl(woollen piece of cloth) this photograph was taken in december, the climate in india is very extreme , in the summers hundreds of people die coz of heat waves, where as in the winters they die of the cold. i don't know where this pair spends the nights, but i guess it's on the pavement outside the shops like all the other beggars.
NOTE:the darkness is intended as in a lot of parts in india a girl child is considered a burden and a lot of injustice is done to her e.g female infanticide. so in a nutshell her life is kept in DARKNESS

I like it Sorhab. Nice you metionned where it was taken. Connaught place is so "occidental". I Like the way we can half see the pendant the father is wearing and the eyes of the girl.

Very dark shot compared to the average likings, I suppose that's why you got less comments for this one.
It doesn't bother me since this is meant and is supposed to bring out more atmosphere and symbols.
I was some past day writing you about Max Pam, maybe you've also seen his shot (alas, not on the linked page) of a dark veiled Kenyan woman walking in Lamu streets : he deliberately put the shot into dark while he dodged the white of her eyes in order to appear outstandingly clear, like these were the only parts of her that could communicate to the outside.
I'd suggest you to try this on your shot, also completely burn the brighter pavement area.
You like dark moody BW photographers, do you? Here are another two you might like : Paulo Nozolino, Michael Ackerman the latter published a great photo book called "end time city" about Benares.

i shall check it out tonight on my own computer since the screen i have in the office has a very bad resolution....and Icannot see a thing;-)) . First feel is that it conveys very well this deprivation you are talking about and this sheer poverty.. more comment tonight then ...;-)
wow! a nice screen makes a whale of a difference. i can clearly see the white eye now and the ribs of the father that you mentionned.; still not too obvious ... one has to look for it... i think luko's comment is very judicious! what do you think?
points seem to have disappeared and i am out of it now. see that tomorrow;-)

I guess you tried Luko's suggestion and I am curious about it too..but this one is a story...yes, I am from the lucky ones and I can see his ribs, piece of worn out cloth, her eyes...and she is wearing a modern t-shirt...this is happening today...
great notes too..but before reading I first thought of Kafka I think..making me feel like an insect...sticky sentimental ? maybe..I sometimes am...
great sohrab...

Powerful shot. I like the dark shot but feel it could use a little bit of lightening. Just enough to distinguish the features of the girl's face.

Great Shot Sohrab!
I have passed through Connaught Place so many times in my air conditioned car looking at the beggers. This brings the memory back as I am sitting here in California. I hope this photograph will be able to make some difference in their lives.
Do try out the suggestions by Luko. I think it will make the picture more striking.
