C'est un cliché très bien composé avec toutes ces gouttes d'eau sur la vitre et le personnage qui affronte les intempéries.
Déjà la neige chez toi alors qu'en France on bénéficie toujours de températures clémentes pour la saison.

Une infinie tristesse se dégage de cette photo, une mer de grisaille où même la neige n'arrive pas à illuminer, s'en remettant pour seules couleurs aux voitures et aux affiches des commerces... L'humain n'est qu'une ombre fuyante et floue. Image bien représentative de ce déficit de lumière qui nous afflige quand les jours raccourcissent!

Ou est-ce que ce n'est là que projection?..

Le faible contraste de l'ensemble contribue pour beaucoup à l'ambiance, et ta composition est encore une invitation au mouvement. Bravo!

Bonjour Claire,
Quelle bonheur que tu nous livre une image :o)
Je suis très partagé sur le ressenti que celle-ci m'apporte et pour moi, c'est une image "à tiroir".
Elle est en même temps triste car on sent cette ambiance froide et humide. Le personnage avec sa silhouette floue est quasi fantomatique et ajoute un côté énigmatique à l'ambiance générale...
D'un autre côté, toute la scène est vue comme dans Alice : De l'autre côté du miroir... et de manière délibérée.
Je conclue donc, avec mon optimisme du moment, que c'est un message d'espoir et je reste bien au chaud à déguster le cappuccino pour observer la scène qui se déroule sous mes yeux.
Pas besoin de te dire que c'est très réussi :o) mais ca fait quand même du bien à l'égo...

What I will find though, is...My soul, lost somehow long time ago.
It was quite easy. It's there, lying next to yours, on the snowy-sunny-busy-empty-noisy-quiet sidewalks of the great city of Montreal.

So many things to like here, Claire! I like your use of water droplets; I like the tiny touches of color in an otherwise gray scene--I bet there's a lot of life being lived behind the lights of that restaurant, even while the outside is so bleak and wintery. I like the way the passing person is made anonymous by the slight blur. A rich portrait of winter in the city! Regards, Ken.

This is a real winter (here in Spain its too cold but we don't have so many snow). The shot is very nice, the water spots in the glass are like a transparent wall, the snow and the blur person with umbrella. It's a little surrealistic, and very well done. Thanks,

tu nous présentes ta ville et l'on sent dans ta note tout l'amour que tu y portes, et a voir cette photo je m'imagine que tous les jours ne sont pas facile comme ici la neige la pluie, le froid, mais quand on aime rien n'est difficile, pour preuve tu es sorti pour faire cette magnifique photo ou l'ambiance est tiré de certain film policier avec ce personnage en ombre, c'est un régal Claire de regarder tes photos et c'est dommage que tu ne postes pas plus souvent

On sent bien toute l'exécrabilité de cette journée du 16 décembre dernier, dont certains l'ont comparé au fameux 4 mars 1971. Un peu bizarre de voir un parapluie dans toute cette neige, signe que le temps devait être très doux malgré l'époque. J'espère que toutes ces gouttelettes d'eau ne sont pas sur ta lentille.

Superbe atmosphère dans cette photo. Le personnage-silhouette apporte beaucoup à la composition (j'avoue avoir un faible pour le cadrage proposé en WS avec le personnage moins centré). Très belle unité de tons, judicieusement cassé par ces petites lumières (feux, phares, enseigne). Belle photo, Claire!

C'est une image d'archives mais ca fait quand meme du bien de voir toute cette neige, meme si on sent qu'elle va pas tarder a se transformer en gadoue, t'as pas peur toi d'exposer ton 17-85 a toute cette humidite, vous avez des versions speciales grand nord au Quebec ? Ce passant emmitoufle et protege par son parapluie est peut etre un peu trop a droite mais il fait bien passer le message et apres avoir batifole un peu dans la neige on irait bien prendre in vinchôôôôô dans la chaleur du restaurant au fond !

This doesn't seem a photo, Claire. Because of the rain effect it seems more like a drawing, may be an image from a comic book. Also because of the colors, as if it was a study, a skretch that was not finished. A ghost is passing by, in your city. In this time of the year, with this weather, we are all strangers in the street, shadows trying to reach their destinations so they can be persons again, in warm and confortable indoors. But outside, we are all unfineshed persons in a surreal grey world.
You made a magnificent capture from the inside, claire. One of the best winter shots I ever saw. Is my imagination or he seems like having a cigar coming out from his mouth...because this is from a comic book, he could be Dick Tracy or any other hero in an investigating, following a lead.

It was a cold February day and I was all by myself in cold Vienna for six months. I never had experienced a snow storm before and I remember the excitement my heart felt when I first stepped the large wooden door and hit the street. The sudden romantic and dreamy perception I had of this moment was quickly gone and I finally understood why a large dark umbrella was such an essential tool. It was my city at the time and still one of the most precious of the memories. Thanks for this dear Claire.

Is this man with an umbrella real? He doesn't seem a real person, but rather painted on the glass, or made of cardboard, so surreal he is standing there, like he has come from another age, another time, another planet... Also, what is interesting here is that he almost didn't move during 30 sec of your exposure, and so didn't the cars, despite having a green light! The whole scene reminds me Magritte a bit...

i think i dont have my city...
i was born somewhere in central poland, in a small town which i left while 4 years old,
then i lived in my lovely katowice, for many many years, then in another town near by - in gliwice, and finally moved to warsaw some 9 years ago...
where is my town? i think i am torn between katowice, and warsaw, but i am also torn between my city (whichever it is) and my countryside (whcih is obviously - podlasie);
and my city is what i want to see, and every time i hit the downtown - i find something interesting, unusual, fancy,

i dont think your city is much different to mine, i think that the snow that covered it utterly just coated all the places you mentioned in the note and as hidden - we have to only imagine them, you secretely hidden them under that snow;
but thats good - we must "streach" our brains a bit,
and the drops - arent they some tears? but wjy to cry? must be some reason...

Well, you are certainly doing both your country and your city proud with the shots you post. This one has an effervescene provided by the snowflakes/raindrops almost springing right out of the frame. The person holding the umbrella appears ghostlike in the scene, while the lights in the background are just enough to give the photo that extra sizzle. I am glad you did not go B&W here. For this is life as expressed in your note...later.

Je lisais à nouveau ton intro et j’ai bien aimé la phrase de Kundera que tu cites. Çà oblige à mettre son comportement en perspective et s’interroger à savoir si on déguste la vie ou si on la dévore... Slowness vs fast track...

En lisant ta réponse à Bantonbuju, je comprends que tu as la jeune quarantaine... Je te supporte moralement puisque je te suis de très près, de très, très près... Dans ma tête j’ai 23 ans, mais l’idée que je me dirige davantage vers la cinquantaine que la vingtaine est parfois déprimant, mais çà ne dure que 15 minutes...

Bon, maintenant ta photo...; çà non plus çà ne remonte pas le moral... Bon, peut-être que tu fais partie de ses irréductibles qui aiment jouer dehors, peu importe la température, mais dans mon cas, je préfère demeurer à la maison par des journées pareilles... Sauf que la photographie me fait sortir depuis l’automne dernier, puisque j’ai commencé à prendre ce hobby à coeur.

Je n’ai pas de scènes de rues comme celle que tu proposes et çà me donne le goût d’en faire. Tu as bien choisi ta journée pour donner l’impression à nos amis européens que l’on vit au Nunavut... :-D)

Je connais bien l’endroit où tu as saisi cette bonne photo (McGill et Notre-Dame) et il s’agit d’une intersection très photogénique. Mais ce qui fait tout l’intérêt de ton image, c’est cette magnifique silhouette que tu as su croquer au bon moment. Les goutelettes dans la fenêtre intensifient la perception d’intempérie.

Je ne sais pas si quelqu’un a remarqué, mais la forme ombragée sur le trottoir donne l’impression qu’il s’agit d’un pictogramme d’une femme, dont le bras surélevé pourrait tenir un parapluie... Bon, OK, si je suis le seul à voir çà, c’est que je manque de sommeil...

Merci de nous rappeler si cruellement ce qui nous attends d’ici peu... Mieux vaut considérer ces conditions comme des opportunités de photographie.

Mon premier réflexe a été de regarder la date,eh oui,l'an dernier.Ce que je me suis ennuyé par la suite,à attendre la tempête suivante et j'attends encore.
Je crois deviner une certaine tendance dans ton style photographique.
Dès qu'il fait mauvais,tu te réfugies dans un café,près de la fenêtre et telle le tigre qui surveille sa proie,toi tu guettes le malheureux passant qui se démène contre les intempéries pour l'immortaliser sur ta pellicule digitale.N'oublie pas une chose,il faudra bien que tu quittes ta tanière à ton tour et qui sait,une caméra te captera...:-)
Un beau coin de Montréal qui possède une belle personnalité,à qui tu assure une belle immortalité.
Un plaisir comme toujours de savourer tes visions Montréalaises.

Oh, this is the most evocative shot I have ever seen of Montreal, dear Claire... the rain dripping down the window pane, the lone figure negotiating his way in the heaps of snow, the mood of it all... exquisite... so very evocative, Claire. I wish we can meet one day so that I can see the city with your very eyes... we aren't that far apart!

Le thème du parapluie te tient à coeur...pour notre bonheur,l'image n'évoque l'hiver avec un grand H...ces jours gris et froid ou le vent nous gerce les lèvres,(mes hivers du sud ouest de la France ne doivent valoir que la moitie des tiens)les gouttes qui parsèmes l'image ajoutent encore a l'effet tempete,et enfin tu as utilisé une vitesse lente pour avoir ce léger flou de mouvement sur le passant...

j'aime beaucoup l'ambiance de cette photo, un peu nostalgique... ça "sent" l'hiver et son blue. Peu de gens, tous sont restés bien au chaud et quelques téméraires osent arpenter les rues. J'adore les photos avec les parapluies... et celle-ci est magnifique....
L'effet de la neige qui tombe et ces gouttes sur la vitre superbes...
Celle-ci va aussi aller dans mes favorites...

J'aime beaucoup cette image. Tu as su créer un bon climat de la neige en ville. En plus, cette rue me rappelle les Aleje Jerozolimskie, une des principales artères de Varsovie. Mais comme Bantonbuju, je ne sais pas si c' est ma ville : j'ai vécu dans plusieurs grandes villes en Pologne, et Varsovie était la dernière, sans compter les petites villes de province au Nord de Pologne, avant de partir vers Paris. Les vitres mouillées, la neige, les builgings sous la grissaille, les phares des voitures et cette silhouette au parapluie qui affronte le mauvais temps ...

j'adore cette composition mais également ta note qui présente bien ta ville et tes sentiments envers elle...
On sent à la fois de la tristesse mais également une joie de vivre, même un temps épouventable ne va pas vous abattre.

Tu nous proposes une belle photo bien enneigée pour cette fin d'année 2006.
Et elle me plait d'autant plus que la neige nous fais défaut en France pour cette fin d'année... Et oui! Malheureusement les skis sont encore bien rangés au chaud dans le placard... J’aime autant ton choix de prise de vue qu’elle nous donne des sensations bien hivernales et au même temps nous une offre la sensation d’être bien au chaud, derrière cette vitre qui nous protège du mauvais temps.
Très sympa cette photo.

Its pleasing that U have strated uploading. This is a amazing shot. Full of story. The composition is simple yet strong enouh. The atmosphere (snowfalling/raining) has captured beautifully. The monochromic effect along with the colourful light and hordings give it a wonderful look. I suppose U have previsualised it beautifully, click at the right moment. Great shot.

Une belle image pleine de neige: ça réchauffe le coeur! Qui aurait dit qu'un jour nous les tempêtes de neige nous manqueraient! C'est si triste janvier sans (ou avec si peu de) neige.

J'aime beaucoup la prise de vue: le personnage (presqu'une ombre) qui traverse ton image est un peu flou ce qui lui donne un bel air fantomatique. Et que dire des gouttelettes sur la fenêtre, qui contrastent avec la neige accumulée au sol? Une belle illustration de la vie montréalaise.

Alors merci pour cette belle image et, avec un peu de retard, une excellente année 2007!

I have been meaning to pile on to this photo for a while but have a moment tonight ...

it is that rain that gets me .. how it makes those old grey buildings looks .. how the silhouetted person looks out of time .. one of the most thoughtful images I have seen in a while .. like a romantic piece of music it speaks a language of symbols that allow the viewer to hang their meanings on it.

Shooting through the wet window, no doubt from the warmth of welcoming cafe or bar, really emphasises the cold outside.
This image is just dripping with atmosphere, and I like how the only relief from the monochrome bleakness are the lights of the shop and the couple of cars further down the street.
The hurrying figure with the umbrella is a wonderful addition, although I think the shot would have been even better if you had taken it a second or so earlier just after he entered the frame on the left.
