Photographer’s Note

Time to get back on my theme about the TE members I admire. To know what this is all about please read the introductory notes on the first post of the series.

17639 critiques given, 230 workshops made, 980 notes written, 970 photos posted. Information received at Monday, December 4, 2006 at 11:06:14 AM CET. Few other TE member embraces the spirit of the site in a more passionate way than Norbert. There’s always a lot of debate in the forums about the point system and the feedback some receive but a brief understanding on how Norbert likes to live this wonderful experience might give some good answers to all this ongoing issue. This site is about sharing. Some understand it, some don’t. Some like it, some don’t. I love it and I am sure Norbert does it also. Friends are made here, amazing photography is displayed for free, a constant learning process is always on the run.

But if we take this wonderful Norbert posture to the side (almost impossible, I know), all we got is his wonderful photography. Owner of an unblemished technique, never ever have I seen a Nikon used as perfectly as in the hands of our German friend. I always considered the Nippon tool as an instrument of precision and when seeing Norbert work it’s easy to understand why. It almost makes me wanna run to buy an extra D200 body. After posting more than nine hundred photos, variety is a quality that must be present, but his close attention to details, composition and new hi-tech structures is always a recurring theme I love about his work.

The photo I am offering to you here was deliberately thought to this purpose on the first place. I could have portrayed it without a single soul, but Norbert’s late work shows a nice path in grabbing his photography closer and closer to people. So I hope this fits in the overall context of his work.

Thanks my friend for being a precious raw model for this community. Your right posture will always contain more words than any lengthy thread in the general forum. My deepest respect for that. We will be here to celebrate your 1000 post. It will not take much time, I am sure… :)

Excellent Architectural shot Luis!

Clear crisp and sharp lines, rich and appealing colors and this is one of the rare cases where I won't harp on about the horizon as I think it compliments the shot! Haha.

Hello Luis,
This one goes in english as your tributing someone which really deserves the words you are writing on the note. Your choice for this structure IMO is quite corrects and fits into Norbert's work perfectly. It's undenieable that he has a style that fits into this one, I remember a recent post of him about the 'Mercedes Museum? in Stuttgart which is trull outstanding by it's aspect by the way he fitted the lines of it and mostly by the hightech look he managed to get, but I think his work doesn't resume to hightech and we have a nice example on his photos made back in Japan.
I really like tihs tribute to Norbert and by the way your idea of tributing the members that most inspire you on TE.

Norbert will be happy. Too bad he is away from TE for a while. For me Norbert's photos can be described in one word: sweeping, or vast. His landscapes, his cityscapes always encompass so much. As this one does, with the fantastic depth onto the horizon.

Fantastic picture, i love the tilt which giving it even more dynamics. Exposure is perfect on those windows and tthe small bend in the building is really giving the final touch to it...a real beauty.

Tu as réalisé une très belle photo architectural. Tu as bien marqué l'architecture et l'environnement dans lequelle elle se trouve ! Le cadrage est trés bon et permet d'avoir également une vue sur l'horizon !

Great tribute and excellent shot. What is this you're showing us?
I love the tilt and the way the structure speaks a little about its context (the ocean) with that blue color.

Hello Luis. I am finding this on my first full day back at home from Japan, and I cannot tell you how humbled and touched I am by this dedication and by the sentiments expressed in your note. Thank you so very much.

Looking at the photo, I do like a lot how your use of the tilt emphasizes the graphical modernity of this piece of architecture. It is nice that this photo would have so many hues of my favorite color (blue), and the small people included are something that I would have done the very same way and I like it quite a bit. Thanks again.

P.S. My 1.000th photo should be in early January, I'm still looking for something good to mark the occasion ;)

this is really SOMETHING luis, this is trully very much in the line of our friend norbert...

tilt - a debatable tool, sometimes overused (hardly ever seen it used by norbert himself, if ever) - works wonderfully here;

colours - crisp, plain, "metalic" and marine... beautiful

This is excellent photography. The compo is exciting and cool with the lone person there. And I like how the graphical elements of the building is echoed in the depth. Plus very fine 'blue' colours and superb lighting on the building. Very well taken. A fine tribute to Norbert.

Excelente prespectiva que foi conseguida com o inclinar da máquina juntamante com uma grande composição conseguida entre a base da torre vasco da gama e a ponte vasco da gama no horizonte, gostei ainda do espelhado da luz nos vidros.

Esta coisa dos "Usual Suspects" é das coisas mais motivantes que já se fez neste site e tu fá-lo com excelente qualidade. És pesquisador, analizas ao pormenor, captando o estilo pessoal de cada um e escreves muito bem e em Inglês, o que eu invejo e daí ser esta a 1ª em Português (ou não...). Os teus textos são mesmo muito bons o que justifica o Mário ter dado esta como "useful" e não ter sequer comentado a foto, mas sabemos como ele é exigente...Lembro-me de ele ter dito, há uns tempos atrás num Forum qualquer, que o Norbert não era humano, mas talvez mais uma máquina do futuro, tal o empenhamento impressionante dele (o gajo está em todas!!!), ao que o Norbert respondeu: "Descobriste a minha identidade secreta!". Quanto à foto, acho que é bastante apropriada e gosto especialmente da inclinação, dando a ideia de um barco e ao mesmo tempo enfantizando a estrutura moderna High Tech. Sem a inclinação não teria de todo a mesma piada.
O Norbert não está nos teus favoritos e eu pensei que este tema era só para os teus favoritos...mas se calhar o Norbert é especial, não é?

Nice entry in these usual suspects series, and I see your "victim" has appreciated this shot, I too can find here his interest for architecture and blue hues, not sure though the tilt belongs so much to Norbert's trade mark but it dits well here to the dynamism of the curve, and yes many people have stepped in his views lately, which is quite a change. There is one thing in your photo that just does not fit to Norbert, do you know which one ? As usual I enjoyed reading your extensive note, once again a great work Luis.

Ola Luis, a nice dedication to Norbert, and simply beautiful... I like how the building is overwhelming the frame; interesting how its lines are continued by the lines of the airplane trail and the bridge; and the lonely figure with the reflection makes the shot much better!
