Photographer’s Note

Yesterday was a beautiful warm day and I decided to wander around Plaka, the oldest part of Athens. Although most of the streets are full of tourists, nice cafes where citizens have their morning coffee and people selling everything you can imagine, there are still parts of the old neighbourhood that remain untouched. As you head up the Acropolis hill, don't follow the crowd but get lost in the small peaceful narrow streets. You will end up in the village 'Anafiotika' in the centre of Athens with lots of cats and small backyards where a lot of old people live under the shadow of this holly monument! It was built by the builders of the Aegean island of Anafi, who were invited to construct the palace of the first king of Hellas, Othon ('Οθων). Feeling nostalgic for their birthplace in their long stay in Athens they recreated it in the upper area of Plaka. They built small, whitewashed houses, reproducing the architectural style of their village.
