Photographer’s Note

Brigadier-General John Nicholson's obelisk (in the distance) stands on top of the Margalla Pass which is near Pakistan's capital city Islamabad and a few kilometres from Taxila, a very famous city of antiquity.

Nicholson was a Victorian era British war hero who died while storming Delhi during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. He played a major role in crushing the mutiny. He was a legend in his own time and served for years as an administrator in the territories now comprising Pakistan. This plain but elegant granite obelisk was erected in his memory in 1868 or 1890.
