Another day during my business trip in China, took us to the Shanghai Stock Exchange. I expected to enter a find a hive activity, young hypeactive brokers conveying the latest options prices on three telephones at once, semophoric signals being sent across the floor. I found, amongst a silence that resembled a chutch, a young broker alseep at his computer, either through boredom or had I missed the excitement?
Its Friday - have a nice weekend!

Not as busy as the busier markets from around the Western World. A goo dpicture of this trading atmosphere. I see lots of computers and no people to buy/sell. Thanks for sharing this interesting and informative picture Elaine.

what an interesting view! So many computers, so few people. Well spotted, thanks for sharing.

Excellent shot revealing boredom of stock excange. Repetition of shapes efficiently shows everything and everyone as mere components of big machine. That's worse than a hen nouse!

Nice pattern, it looks likes this stock exchange is on vacation!

The densely packed rows of workstations give this image a rather claustrophobic feel, while the personal items of the brokers break up the regulated uniformity very nicely. Of course, the inclusion of the sleeping guy at top right is the icing on the cake.
Ideally, I would have preferred it if you had taken it from directly from behind, instead of the slight angle from which you took the shot, but that's a pretty minor detail.
I think it's excellent.

Bien vu, Elaine! Un instantané (pas très enthousismant quand même) de notre monde moderne parfaitement capté dans cete photo très bien cadrée.

So many computers... nice repetition. Great that you captured that guy sleeping.
Some of those computers look really old!

isn't lunch time rather? or end of day.. or the Stock Exchange just closed maybe? Anyway it is a fun shot! pityu you did not distort the bottom part to bring it horizontal with the top part...

Great shot! A typical situation in China, believe me... but I still believe you met here with quite hard working employees compared to those I am used to deal with! :O)The shot itself is a beautiful composition. Great one! Tibo

Hi Elaine, That's great! It almost looks unreal, like a dollhouse or something. Not quit the scene one expects when entering a stock exchange place. I very much love the way you composed this shot that has a very graphical feel to it. It helps to digest the chaotic touch of the scene. I think looking at this picture must have been the best moment of a not so good day; I'll keep it open, so it can make me smile! Very funny! Sabine

Elaine, it´s so interesting to see how the varios degrees of 'mess' in each desk. there are signs of excitement and tension in the way objects were left behind.
Besides, the pattern repetition, the red spread all over the frame, the fact no one works alone and everybody is surveilling everybody in this work architecture tells a great history of modernity.

ah ah ah, really good friday mood !
This office is a nightmare !
I would like to work there for nothing... even not 1 million $ (ok... let me think... we can eventually negotiate)

This is a great journalistic picture which also has many photographic assets. Like the rythm caused by the rows, and the repetition of the computer screens: Was there a possibility to remove the right bottom corner with PF ? Izzet

A great compo from interesting POV, strong graphical impact, nice colors , sharpness and a good capture of the sleeping broker...
delkoo (68) 2006-11-25 6:06
it's very funny to see the person sleeping in the corner among the busy people , the scene looks like a hive.
Albrecht (11279) 2006-11-25 9:27
A strong and special compo. Interesting and well seen and captured moment there.

Have a nice sunday

I like the composition, it almost looks like frames in a cartoon. Actually that young broker works the London desk and is just waiting for the exchange to open. ;)

A photo veri good like from the top view. Graphical and colorful.

It is like a 21st century doll's house, marvellous, whimsical shot, the pov is superb, it doesn't allow us to take our eyes away from it, keeps us captive and amazed...
According to a British sociologist we are going to transform into a rather non-feeling species who will have a very close relationship with cyberspace but hardly with one another... empathy is on the wane...
I hope he is wrong.
Your shot is marvellous!
will come back..

sorry for not being really present on TE ; i see that i miss some good pix from you.
this one is different from you unsual style but i like it as a top journalistic image.
exellent and fun at the same time.
Mistral (15402) 2006-12-21 16:54
great photo! It would be perfect if you had cropped the bottom and, as Ben said, if you had taken from behind to avoid distortion (but of course not always is possible).
Anuyway it's a great and (sad) & funny shot!
mdetay (4865) 2007-01-27 7:13
Excellent. This is a typical one!
Standa (1877) 2007-02-20 5:42
you captured real, hard and stressed business life:-)
Fun photo. I like it.
KevRyan (22952) 2009-01-08 4:35
hah ha! Fantastic Elaine - I have never been one for sleeping in the day but as age creeps on I can more and more sympathize with our young broker! I like the blank screen in front of him as if that too had found it all too much.......a great view and nicely composed - i agree a little with Ben about the angle but needs must and the strength of the parallel lines are enough to compensate.
Now why would you have thought of me!? ;-))
All the very best for 2009!!
