Holy cow George,
That may be one of the most captivating shots I have seen in a long time. The point of view here is eyecatching but then the whole thing takes you emotionally...along with your title....that 'comfort' writ large along the bottom of the frame here...that hand holding on...excellent one...just excellent
Cheers

I hate hospitals : each time I smell the hospital odors, I feel my knees trembling, then my feet getting numb, I'm about to faint.
I couldn't attend my daughter's birth, it was her or me...
I can't feel my limbs anymore when looking at this pic, even if it deserves plenty of praises photographically.
Have you seen the look on the nurse's face, same as Eugene W.Smith's physician (probably the greatest portrait ever made). I suppose the use and abuse of medical institutes gives you this look after some years.
Fotopan might have been a dreary film (even though I haven't used it), the incredible twist of fate is that in western Europe, we're getting crazy about eastern europe photographic (mainly darkroom) products coming from Foma or Forte brands.
This is fantastic George, one of the more impactful shots I have seen here. It might have been terrible film, but the results here are really quite nice. The tones look good to me and the grain is not bad at all either. It has lost some highlights; this actually looks as though it might have been pushed to me. A really good expression on the nurse's face and fantastic use of perspective distortion to emphasize the hand. If I was a picky man, I migh wish that you hadn't cropped the tips of the fingers; luckily I am not a picky man ;)
Really nice George

What a great feeling between them George. Look at nurses eyes! Body languages, means their hands. One is fingers down other covering it while checking pulse. It’s pure, full with compassion. Congratulations.

Dear George,
it's very good history and very good picture. Full of sense and very comfort, yes.
Julia
I think this is close enough. Actually, I dont think you could get any closer unless youd step into one of her veins and let yourself flow through her body and into her heart. I wonder why this scene seems so familiar to me (in fact I know why...), and even though Im not a doctor/physician nor a patient in need of a particular medical treatment, I almost feel at home when looking at it in the sense there is reassurance and calmness in the way one hand takes care of the other. This might as well represent a very simple medical intervention, but I cant avoid perceiving the fading link between life and death, or health and illness. The symptom of abandon is there, in the falling hand and in the eyes of the nurse, and yet there is simultaneously an unbreakable attachment to life, a permanent will of survival, breath after breath until the musical instrument, within us humans, starts playing its tune again.

Is this a piece of a journalistic series, Gio´?
If so, wowowowoww, congratulations.
for me the most impactful image i´ve seen here.
Darren already mentioned the tip of the fingers, but i must confess, I haven´t noticed it before.straight to my 100+ fav.
you´ve made my day with this shot.

A beautiful image, George! Thanks to your POV and the light, the emhasis is all on the healing touch (even if she's actually just taking a pulse), something we of course often find missing in modern medicine. The light and shadow are perfect, bringing out detail in the hands despite the grain. (The grain is good here, as it adds a documentary mood.)
I think close up versus telephoto is not necessarily a matter of comfort or trust. There are many candid situations where going close for the shot will interfere with exactly what you want to photograph, say when a person is gazing toward something, and they will look toward you instead, if you go close. In your photo here, that's not a problem because they are both busy and won't pause just because you're there with a camera. So for this shot, closer is better.
Regards, Ken.

Hi George, excellent picture, very warm despite the coldness of grainy BW. What nobody has noticed so far, and what, for me, is the main esthetic and emotional content of the photo, is that the nurse is not only taking pulse, but at the same time actually looking at the owner of the hand, and vice versa, and although we do not see the second face, we know that they are looking at each other. The picture makes us imagine the second face, the expression on it. This is fantastic.
And about those fingers... You know, in one of my favourite films, "Arizona Dream" by Kusturica, the main character recalls what his father once told him, and it was "It doesn't matter if you walk on the street without trousers... if you have a good hat!" So I don't care about those cut fingers...
Cheers

What a superb image with such a dreadful film...yes, I had used this film as well, in the 70's, ususually with terrible results. Here in the hands on a expert this one is marvelous...wonderful closeup detail (but not the super-sharp clinical Zeiss detail) and delicious grains. Nice tonality too! Your note is a thoughtful commentary on the technique of shooting people. [I do think, however, that one shouldn't take Capa's comment too seriously or too generally]

I've often said in TE how much I like hands. I told about the expressiveness of them, how they speak volumes. But what I never said before is how much more important to me is that hands can touch. The sense of touch is one of the most close to the heart. And your photo gives us an image of that. And more. The warmth of that touch. The care in that touch. The ability of that touch...
... And the eyes.
I can't say if those eyes are looking at the patient or if this nurse is monitoring some machine, but the same can be said for her eyes that I said about her hand. The warmth, the care, the ability.
I had to go at hospital a few times. Be it for me of for my father. Most of the time, I was amazed by the dedication nurses had for their patients (who are not always...well... patient!). And I have a lot of admiration for them. And your photo is not only an homage to a nurse, it is a testimonial of what makes us truly human in this land of pain and suffering.
For your humanity, you deserve at least a thousand of those jade faces.
For helping us to be more human, you deserve an infinity of them. And my deepest respect.
Claire

Hello George,
I completly agree with Robert Capa, although I didn't know that he was the author of that saying. But I always tell the same to my students " Don't be afraid of getting closer "
This exactly what you did here, and the emphasis is on the hand checking the pulse but also recomforting the patient: Some would perhaps tell you that the sharpness is not enough, I would say that it is OK when it needs to be. And after all it is an almost vintage picture.
All the best - Izzet

Hi George,
A very powerful and emotional image made even more so by the B&W and graininess.Your perspective and wide angle have really emphasised the hands and this small and yet now strong bond between two people who maybe only a few moments ago didn't no that they each existed.A good choice of DOF to show the look and pose of the nurse. An amazing image....great work and a favorite for me.

tremendously natural, real ... beautiful;
how close can one get? hope it is not a new race that you are announcing, j1, arent you?
these two hands, these crossed, close hands, they show how important the humanity is, how impoortant it is to be by these ill people in difficult moments, in particular when you consider that in those days relatives were not allowed to stay by the patients in the hospitals...
this is cool stuff, i need more, i'll get more i know :-))

Your people pictures have always been your most succesful George, and I think this is one of your best.
It's a superb demonstration of the ability of a wide angle lens to really get "inside" the image; by getting so close you give the viewer a real sense of involvement.
A tender moment, and you captured it wonderfully.
My one criticsim is that I wish you had included the fingertips of the patient.
Dreadful film, eh? I really like the grain, and it adds to the effectiveness of the image here. Where can I buy some? :)
Cheers,
Ben

I will start this critique in stealing this one to my favorites. I know that this doesn't say much to you, but it indeed speaks thousand words to me. It's one of the most sensitive pictures I've seen lately and I can't see myself talking about any technique here. The feelings it arises clear surpasses any other word and if your goal is capturing people's thought than let me whisper that you succeeded here. My deepest respect.

Hi George,
Just read that the former KGB officer who "may have been poisoned" just died here in England. (don't know if you've heard of it, but it's the big buzz in Europe). And here you come with the "reality of my country in 1980". coincidence?
This is probably my favorite photo from your gallery, and one of my top 5 from TE I'd say.
So much tension and sentiments here!!! The anguish in the nurse's eyes, checking the pulse on this rough hand. Brrr gives me goose bumbs.
This shot should be on the magnum web page!

Hello George,
again, you found a captivating angle of life, very creative! I'm secretly watching you and all of your posts and never dared critiquing one since the last time with your young chess player. I learn a lot because of you and I wish to change from my contemplative shots to shots that are closer to life. This time I felt it was a call as I work everyday in such an environment. Let me tell you that living with sick people everyday keeps your feet on the ground.
I like the look on he woman's face and the suffocating feeling that the room has and that is emphasized by the grain and the texture throughout the picture (wall tiles, skin, sheet). A clock on the wall would be too cool! I'm sorry to bring that up, but the finger cropped disturbs me just a little bit. But you know what, I might not have seen it if it was not for the frame and the 1980, Poland.
"The most unexpected results. It's like playing Russian roulette." I like those two sentences and it kind of minds me to try more. To try more and care less.
By the way, you took this picture at the time I was born in Canada.
Have a nice one,
Marc

Brilliant shot, George, reminiscent of the great Eugene Smith (I'mperfectly serious) - the compassion and that UTSIZE hand in the foreground, Masterly and I hate hispitals every bit as much as Luko, not that tghere's a contest going on or anything...

Hello my favourite lost idiot :)
So, you`ve decided back to the human`s people. I see and I remember very well fotopan HL and not only this ;). Awful quality, but I suspect the more important here are the feeling you`ve wanted to show. And I must correct it - maybe it looks for an emotional picture, but in fact this anaesthesiologic nurse only measures a pulse...;) I must admit, she has very nice look and beautiful eyes... You deceived us, but did it excellent, so I forgive you :).
Have a nice weekend.

one of the best portraits on TE ever, your best photo, I think,
will be back, not to give jade, greenies, mula, nachos or whatever a hell people usually come back to give, but to truly express myself when I am sitting and enjoying the image by myself.
Note to you and Darren, why give a f.,k about tip of the finger?????? it doesn't add anything to the story.
Peter
how can I add anything making sense after Gal's assesment.
will be back again
still can't really explain in words what I feel about it, guess simply because this image is worth one million words, and can put together maybe a dozen...
you have captured here everything what life is about, the beginning, the middle and the end, all the emotions and states associated with it, from weakness, through caring, love, loneliness, friendship, ..... I am just about to choke up.... no I have no words, I am simply wasting cyberspace, let's just enjoy it and take it all in.

Hi George,
This serie immediatly caught my eyes. It's great that you have oppurtinity to take pictures in such circumstances. Andthere's no voyeurism, each picture gives an impression of dignity. In this one, I find fascinating these hands. Becaue of their symbolism, but also because of their texture (the light on them, the wrinkles, the grain). I like also the opposition between the tilted background and this solid, ferm foreground. Totally reassuring.

George, that is a great shot, although I don't agree with your title. Comfort means holding the hand and giving support. What happens here is pulse measure and looking to some hidden monitor. Anyway, the composition with both hands in the foreground and the face of the anesthesiologist in the back, turned face is wonderful. Good choice of B&W as well as the strong grain. Finally the off center of the frame is at least interesting.

Yes George, this is just so incredibly strong. I should copy / paste this message to each and every picture in this theme, since the quality is humbling.
But I know you do not care about these things, about points, about praise and recognition - which is visible in your work. You care about the feeling here. All you care about. That's how it should be.
Greetings, Dennis

Hello George,
You photographed this one from a great angle and managed to capture lots of emotion. That hand checking the pulse in the foreground speaks volumes about human touch and comfort, and those eyes are so expressive of the care offered by the nurse.

George,
Nice shot! I might have focused on her eyes, rather than the hands.
You are right about photographing people. It is very touchy and rewarding. I take a lot of shots of musicians, and sometimes even performers start feeling self-conscious after staring int a lense for many exposures. I much prefer to take candid pictures. The problem is that if you miss the moment you can't get it back!

I never felt really at ease in hospitals, so this comforting hand in the FG is really reassuring and powerful - this is a timeless and impressive photo !
(All the photos of your theme are precious and masterpieces !)

Excelente foto.
