For the Greeks, the donkey was associated with the Syrian God of wine, Dionysius. The Disney film Fantasia (1940) features a Dionysian character on a donkey. The Romans also valued and would use it as a sacrificial animal.

The donkey makes a number of appearances in the Christian Bible. In the Old Testament, God chose to speak through a donkey to show Balaam the folly of his ways. In the New Testament, Christ rode into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.

Legend has it that the cross on the donkey’s shoulders comes from the shadow of Christ's crucifixion, placing the donkey at the foot of the cross.
It was once believed that hair cut from this cross and hung from a child's neck in a bag would prevent fits and convulsions.

The Bible often specifies if a person rode donkeys, since this was used to indicate a person's wealth in much the same way as ownership of luxury cars do today.

In North of Brazil for 10 real ( 2 pounds) you can ride a donkey by the sea for half an hour. But the poor animal seems to suffer with the hit and lack of water, as in Northeast water is something very rare.

The man riding it on the picture is the guy who owns the Donkey and makes business renting him for this short trips by the sea...

Bonsoir Ana,

Cumprimentos, Anabela

Hello Anna,

A nice little picture if I may say so Many assets such as the subtle light; the donkeys feet apart and the mans gesture with the stick
Perhaps it is a bit centered Friendly yours = Izzet

Hi Ana.

It's always a pleasure to see domestic animals on the sea coast. People usually here on TE don't like to see things centered and put the subjects on 1/3 or 2/3 width of the picture and no one can explain why, which is why I started doing the same thing. But if you keep up with this style of centering and stick to it, I won't think it is bad. The light is phenomenal and it is nice that you captured both the movement of the rider and the donkey, as well as the movement of the sea.

take care, Aleks

Great shot Ana - the scale of the little donkey against the man and then the whole against the sea is really good - a really interesting note.......most of my response is in the reply to Aleks though.....

damn, if this is not the best donkey shot, i've seen in my life...
If not the baseball cap...It could be HIMSELF, riding there... To save the world...

All the best, Ana.
