Photographer’s Note
This is a traditional stone house in Messinian Mani. It is a very old building-continuously being inhabited-in the port village of Kitries. Kitries is a small village which was the place where the respective Maniot Leader (mpehs) had his headquarters from 1770-1821. This is where the 2500 strong Maniot force gathered before the liberation of Kalamata on the 23rd of March 1821. Up to 1937 there was no road to Kalamata (just a mulepath) so anyone that wanted to go there for supplies or any other official reason embarked on big boats to get there and back.
