Photographer’s Note
It took my friend and I four days to walk over the Gaoligong Mountains, in far N-W Yunnan, from Gongshan in the Nujiang Gorge, to Bapo in the Drung Gorge. With a guide, we hiked along the 'old horse road,' as the locals call it. Referring to it as a road, however, is somewhat of a joke. For the first part, it was merely a very long, narrow path through the forest, eventually turning into rocky landslides, and barren alpine land.
This particular shot was taken on day three, a couple hours after crossing the pass, which is located at an elevation of 3,800m. The last two days were the harshest, with ten hours of almost non-stop hiking each. Over the course of these two days, we spent a total of ten hours (!) walking through rocky streams and waterfalls, as seen here. It certainly was interesting, but also very demanding, and our feet showed the signs.
