Photographer’s Note

The train ride to the Nariz del Diablo is a popular attraction for tourists in the Ecuadorian sierra, both national and international. Although it can be a long and tiring journey (especially after getting up well before dawn to make sure to catch the train), gorgeous views like this make it worth a go.

Because this was taken from the last car of the moving train, I shot with the ISO speed set to 400 and a fast shutter speed. Despite that, I am still happy with the depth of field here.

great view and great shot.
The railway does not seem in very good condition !
So thank twice for the image !
It seems the horizon is a bit tilted, but it's not very important.

Adam, This is a neat shot! I am alwaus a big fan of railway ties, so that got my into your photo. However, the real joy is following the ravine through all the mountains which, through their lines, keep bringing my eye back to the ravine. I think that it is really incredible that you were able to compose this on the fly from a moving train.

I will second the comment about the condition of the railroad. The deterioration makes for a gerat detail.... however... were you safe??? Or is the next photo in this series one of the train dangling over a cliff?

Hi Adam,
Great mountain landscape. Rails that certainly show age and don't seem to get much traffic nowadays. Deep scene with good attention to foreground.

Sweet. Trains are an awesome way to travel in that you see so many places you wouldn't otherwise.

Hi Adam,
An amazing landscape and what a POV. You are some lucky person. I would have loved to have had the opportunity to ride this train while in Ecuador in 1991. We drove from Quito to Cuenca and naturally drove by Alausi. What scenery!
