Photographer’s Note
It was from this "finest and most splendid city in the world" and aboard one of these vessels that Marco Polo set off in 1271 and began a journey that would last 24 years and take him more than 24,000 miles through the bleak deserts and rugged mountains of the Middle East, following some of the many branches of the Silk Road in Central Asia, to China and the court of Khubilai Khan.
