Photographer’s Note
Some people probably think it's a shame to make a photo of the Cinque Terre in black and white given all the pastel colored structures, brightly colored boats, and the cobalt colored water. But I like this particular photo in black and white. I think without the distraction of color it's easier to notice and appreciate the beauty of the different shapes and luminosities of the buildings and the texture of the stonework and concrete ramp. Plus I always think stormy looking skies appear more foreboding in black and white.
This is one of my personal favorites. I have this hanging in my living room.
Originally shot on Fuji Velvia with my Fuji GSW690III. Converted to black and white in Photoshop with a little bit of sepia tone added by increasing the red and yellow in the mids and shadows by 5 to 10 points. This was shot soon after this other photo I have here on TrekEarth. You can see the same two boats resting on the harbor ramp.

hi Todd,
I agree with you relating to the effects of N & B, that reveals stronger aspects the angle is vraiement well chosen, strong contrasts give power to the image.

Hi Todd, a fine example of black-and-white proving less can be more. Sometimes colour can be a distraction; black-and-white allows the essence of the subject to show through. Look at the many 'chocolate box' landscapes on TE, many of which attract a flood of points. Take the seductive colour away and the composition is often poor and, beyond the colour, the subject isn't always captivating. But this photograph is different. The black-and-white allows that wonderful sweeping composition to scream, the heavy cloud to take on an added dimension. And the sepia toning encourages the texture to become clear and crisp. A wonderful photograph. And a favourite of mine. Stephen

Amazing details in this and the textures stand out so much better in the B&W version
