Photographer’s Note
Just snapped in the passing on a walkabout, I thought the light looked good. Nearly into the sun, was colour but took the colour away.
This is about a 3 minute walk from the 'touristy' centre of the town at one of these converted police box coffee stalls. I may be wrong but I get the impression that the fabric of the capital needs some serious looking after. The cracked and broken pavements, the terrible roads and the litter, especially just a short way from the centre centre, is disappointing. Seems to have deteriorated over the past couple of years.
On the other hand the place is jumpin' just now and fun to be in!

Nice study Dougie, I especially like the way you've captured the small cloud of smoke. Nicely lit and B&W is the perfect choice. Regards, Roberto

Hi Dougie, a perfectly observed shot. Your timing is spot on and the 20D has delivered exactly the right exposure. Wonderfully contrasty B&W as well. A great street photograph. Stephen

Hi Dougie!
Please don't tell us Edinburgh is falling! Would this old man's smoke be that of the sentenced? Oh the crumbling of vital organs sometimes is a whiff of pleasure...
You shot this with a care for the light which looks like it was also doomed to a brilliant b&w. The puff of smoke is at the best of the effect it has, not on the lungs but on the eyes, for a change!
Striking inklings... hope they won't bode any ill...

Perfect B&W street image Dougie. I'm not a smoker (vehmently anti-smoking, the ban is the best thing that has happened here in years!) but I really like smoky photographs, I just think it adds to the atmosphere so much!

Hi Dougie, I really love this photo, B/W serves it perfectly and you've done it so well, the light and shadows all fall into the right places. The old man's face covered in smoke is so eerie, sadly reminds me of a grandfather I barely knew, though he didn't die of smoking but of another public menace, hit by a car.
well done, Betty

Hi Dougie,
this reminds me of an old 60's photograph. You've captured the smoke perfectly, the light is perfect as is the POV. I wonder what he was pondering on? A really good capture, well done, my son is into this type of B&W shot, he would approve.

Hi Dougie,
I was viewing the main UK gallery the other day and this shot of yours catched my eye. However I didn't leave any comments.
Now a few days later I see it again after you left a comment on one of my pictures.
It is a brilliant street life shot. The light and atmosphere is superb. B&W goes very well here.

Great picture, I so wish he was holding a guitar though, that would have been an amazing bonus. As you say, the lighting is very good and the composition with the graffiti in the back & the sandwich board it all makes for a superb opicture.

Exelent picture, I was waching your work and this capture my attention, I like B&W picture, this in particular is interesting because you took one side to this person, and the capture of the cigarrete smoke, makes is even better, the secret here is you can not see his face because the smoke and he is in hes side, the B&W this give a mistery plus the ligth over his head and the shadow this is amazinf and I made many questions to my self like how will be his face, how old will be him, what he is doing here, he will have family and many other things, this why I like this picture.
Exelent, congratulations
Elias
