On the Chinese-Kyrgyzstan border on the Irkeshtam pass we had to stay for one night because the road was blocked. Going to the toilet was a social event and when you looked behind you, you had a beautiful view ;-)

Hi Erik,
Quite an interesting story and picture. Never seen toilets of that kind before. I agree that they should have organized things in a way that let people using the toilets have the big view at the same time.
ps: I like the white shirt of the guy in the middle .. but that is another story :)
Thank you for that instructive picture.
Pascal.

hi erik,
oh yes! public is public!! very funny and interesting shot!! where you waiting your turn??:))

It's not a pretty sight but it is real life. I guess we have to keep an open mind. Without pictures like this we wouldn't know how good we have it in the modern world. Thanks for sharing.

This is a pretty brave photo, first to take, then to share here. I have experienced public toilets in China, but never seen one quite so "open air" as this one. Interesting!

Picture could do with a bit of tidying up on Photoshop though, especially at top left.

Hey Erik,
Well I find it "too public" but I guess when nature calls...at least they have open air toilets rather than doing it on the streets like dogs. Very unusual capture of "nature" INTERESTING! Quite embarrasing to some though...hahahaha
Regards,
JHCris

Hi Erik, well caught. I had several times the chance to take similar shots around china, but never had the courage to do it. I know, I should have taken out my camera and shot but... Anyway, the wonderful landscape behind improves the composition. Because I know chinese public toilet too well, I even feel the smell on your picture :o/. Well done! Tibo

Hi Eric,
Since we "learn about the world through photography", the lesson that we learned here is do all the best that we do not need a toilet while waiting on the borer.
In fact it is always difficult to find a toilet on the border passing. It is not amazing because borders are not rated by stars.
THank you for sharing...

What to say, Erik? Disgusting experience! I think I woudn't like to share this kind of experience with others... Anyway, that's what sometimes a traveler finds in his way... Regards! Miguel.

I would not say "beautiful picture" but it's really the kind of picture which makes us "learn about the world". Fortunately, chinese public toilets are not all like this !!
I feel very embarassed for the 3 persons (is it a girl on the right ??) but i guess that when you don't have any other choices, well ... you don't have any other choices !
