Helsinki Lutheran Cathedral - A different view (Part 1)
I was first intrigued by how many submissions there are of the Helinki city centre with the cathedral visible (I create a theme for it). Then I was a bit dissapointed by seeing there are mainly only two types of images. Shot from the square just in front of the cathedral or shot from the sea side "arriving in Helsinki" (from the south). So now I'm on a hunt to take a few shots of the cathedral from a different POV.
At least somebody had a different view of the cathedral in this shot.
I took this picture from the northeast, at a distance of about 2km, from the bridge leading from Mustikkamaa to Korkeasaari (Helsinki Zoo). I'm not quite sure I got the hot air balloon in the aesthetically correct position, but I tried. :-)
The following borrowed from a wikipedia entry:
The church was built as a tribute to the Grand Duke, Nicholas I, the Tsar of Russia and until the independence of Finland in 1917, it was called St. Nicholas' church.
A distinct landmark in the scenery of central Helsinki, the church was built in 1830-1852, representing the neoclassical style. It was originally designed by Carl Engel, and later altered by his successor Ernst Lohrmann.
Today it is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Helsinki. Annually more than 350,000 people visit the church, some of them to attend religious events, but most are tourists. The church is in regular use for both worship services and special events such as weddings.
Manipulations:
Cropped
Removed a lamppost (*)
Heavily adjusted shadows and highlights
Resized
USM
Added frame
(*) Bending the rules a little. But the shot did not work with the lamppost in the picture. I'll post a WS of the original if anyone is interested...

Hi Jon,
In most most cases it is a little annoying to have to scroll down to see all of an image, but for this, it works very well! I opened the page and was excited to see what was at the bottom. Also, the crop adds to the verticality. The image could be a little sharper though. Nice shot!

Pretty interesting shot. The Lutheran Cathedral is, I suppose, the most photographed building in Helsinki, yet you managed to create a very original shot here. It's actually quite interesting to see that the items which stand out in the pic, the dome of the church and the hot air balloon, more or less have the same shape. ;-)
