Photographer’s Note

I chanced on this bike trail by accident with my Mosquito Hike. I came back well-covered up, with a bike to try again. I discovered one of the most delightful bike trails that I have ridden. Not only that, but mid-day, the mosquitos were sparse. There is gorgeous river scenery on this eighteen-mile trail although the 'falls' are all really just Class IV -V rapids. I couldn't decide which photo to post, the fireweed or the rapids, What do you think?

Settled in 1874, Bend was a timber town and ranch-supply center by the time it was incorporated 100 years ago. The seat of Deschutes County, Bend grew slowly over the years, even after the launch in 1968 of Sunriver, Oregon's best-known resort, 15 miles south of town. That began to change in the mid-1980s, when Bend and its surrounding area exploded with new housing, shopping centers and resorts. The population shot from 20,000 in 1990 to the latest Census Bureau estimate of 59,779, with many newcomers drawn by year-round outdoor recreation. Bend has become not only a national hotbed for mountain biking, but also for some of the country's best road biking, skiing, fly fishing, canoeing, hiking and rock climbing. How many miles of mountain bike trails does Central Oregon have? Someone who should know is Woody Starr, owner of a Bend bike tour company called Cog Wild who describes, "How about 2,000 miles?"
