Photographer’s Note

This is a photo of the Konza Prairie, which was once part of a cattle ranch. In the 1970's the Nature Conservancy purchased the land, which is 8,600 acres large, is now being managed by Kansas State University.
KSU is using the natural area to study the ecosystem of the prairie, primarily that of the tallgrass, as well as prairie conservation and education.
The name is, oddly enough, an alternate spelling of the state name, Kansa. It is taken from the oldest Native American tribe that lived in the area, for which a name is known.
