Photographer’s Note

The sunset scene from Maiga Island, home to some of the seaborned stateless people, around this eastern seaboard of Sabah. Usually just before the setting sun, these stateless fishermen would start to make their way home, from their fishing ground.

Beside fishing, their other livelihoods are seaweed farming and diving for sea cucumbers, on the waters around their islands. There are eight islands which make for the Semporna Islands Park; Bodgaya, Bohey Dulang, Tetagan, Sebangkat, Selakan, Maiga, Sibuan and Mantabuan.

A considerable number of these island villagers are stateless, a demographic term which is defined by the government as someone with a doubtful origin. While some of them have been given papers called Statutory Declaration, the rest are, as good as ET. WIth no papers saying what and who they are, they have practically no future in the current mainstream of life.

With no tangible certainties and no education, only future can tell, where or whom these stateless people will be. One day we will have to pay, for whatever others with resources and authority, neglect or fail to do, to help this people.

Hello Rabani. Wonderful photo, full of light and colour. The composition is quite elegant, with the elongated clouds and the equally streamlined boats. Terrific silhouettes against the shimmering water. This idylic picture belies the sad truth that your note conveys. Regards, Klaudio

What a beautiful sky, what a colour, but the silhouettes of the two canoes in foreground gives lovely composition. Splendid picture.

Beautiful photo, Bani. Such a balanced and harmonious compo with the bouat silhouettes in the foreground, and the layered mountains towards the back. Also a fine add with the deep orange luminosity in the sky at the upper right area. Good and relevant notes, too, as usual.

Hi Rabani, Very pleasant scene from the island near Sabah. This is supposedly some of the best diving in the area and it is easy to see why. Good treatment of the colours. Murray.
