There are a good many ways to indulge a sweet tooth in Mackinaw City and its environs, but none so famous as the area's fudge.

Local confectioners make numerous batches each day, in front of their customers, on rows of long tables, using the finest ingredients.

At something like 90 cents an ounce, the fudge's pricing makes even gasoline seem cheap. But the taste is sublime!

My informal strategy was to buy my fudge at neither the top nor the bottom of the village's main street. I figured I'd get the best deal at neither the first place off the highway nor the one closest to the boat.

And there was provenance to consider, too. Some shops opened in the 1880s, some in the 1970s. My establishment of choice had been in business since 1923.

From many varieties, I opted for chocolate chip and chocolate chocolate. No regrets!!! :)

Nice, the process and all, really nice.

I just wanted to share a funny little fudge story of mine with you.

The last time I went up north, 2 years ago, I went with my parents to the Cherry Festival in Traverse City. On the way home... Well not really on the way but anyway... On the way home I said why don't we drive on up to Mackinaw to complete the trip up Lake Michigan. On the way I said don't forget the fudge, too, when we get there.

So we got there and had lunch. At lunch my mother reminded us that we had to stop in for some fudge. After lunch we went out to the fort. Around Gaylord, about 50 miles south of Mackinaw, I realized we had forgotten to get the fudge. And it would have been perfect mixed in with the ice cream we made from the cherries we picked.

So next time. Although I do pick some up that they sell at the Detroit Auto Show so I haven't been without Mackinaw fudge for too long.
