I have seen many great portrait photographs on this site (immediately I think of people like Clod and Manny), so when I got the opportunity to take a few myself I jumped at it. I had to ask this lady to pose for me, something I had never done before....

This was taken yesterday, during a work function I attended. Part of the day was a visit to the Lesedi Cultural Village just outside of Johannesburg. Lesedi means something like 'Place of Light'.

This woman represents one of the African tribes they teach you about at the village. These people actually stay and work there, and a lot of the things they do are related to fighting HIV/Aids in South Africa and caring for people who have the disease.

The background is typical African style murals, very colorful and pretty.

nice to see sth different from your usual lions ;) nice portrait this time, i like all those colors and those yellow dots on her face. the picture is somehow soft for me - i am not sure what is sharp, where is the focus.. especially her necklace is blurred - maybe DOF is too shallow here... anyway, it is a nice shot

And you were right to do it. very nice Henry.. I love it. It's also nice to see you would want to take one.. The colors, her expression, everything is nice in this shot. Well done.

Congratulations for your first portrait, Henry, and a very very good one. Excellent cvolors and sharpness and a very very interesting face. Beauty indeed. I like the background, it remiminds me the colors of the airplanes of the South African Airlines, a very African style.
Very well done, Henry.

Wonderful portrait, Henry. Nice model and I like that your picture is full of colors. Congratulation! But one question: did the ornament on her face mean something special or it was only decoration?

Colorful Africa... Very nice portrait. I like especially the colours, background and features of her face. Bravo, Henry.

Bon debut henry !

Great portrait, Henry! I really like details on her face. The strong colors at the background just a bit annoy. Anyway, this is a beautiful shot.

Yes, this is a great portrait – very well done, henry. I like the "African" background. And how the colors of those yellow spots on her face and necklace can be found also in the background. Great DOF and framing.
Keep on shooting and posting these, too...

Sorry Henry i missed this one. Great picture again. This time no animals, but a beautiful picture with expression. I like all the details. Good, good job!!

I think it's a very successful venture into the portrait genre, Henry. Not only the background is pretty like you write in your note, but also your main subject. You got very good sharpness and light here, and her expression is very nice - and she is just as colorful and bright as the surroundings, I like the colorful paint on her face. Well captured.

It was worth to ask her, Henry, you got a great portrait, and much more - the beauty and the spirit of the continent.
Congratulations.

A great portrait Henry, different from your familiar wildlife shots. The yellow decoration on her face concentrates the focus on her eyes. The semi blurred background has such nice colour too.

Excellent coulors and sharpness and a very very interesting face Henry, new speciality? Good job.
Prachtig werk Henry!

Those dots really make the face captivating, i keep following them around her face. A great TE shot, well done.

Great one Henry! She has the typical humble look of an African woman, in spite of her pose. You should do some more like this - a theme? The decorations on her face are very interesting, and the clarity is perfect. Well done.

Excellent and unusual portrait.
This shot is very well set with very good color and detail

Really nice portrait Henry. Beautiful colors, classic composition and a good expression on her too. If I were to make one (tiny) suggestion it would be that I would prefer if you had not cropped her necklace as you have, but that is the tiniest of things and this is an excellent photo.

great capture Henry! DOF is excellent. I like the colors and the lines behind her echooing her make up. cropping is nice too. bravo for this portrait. I like your lions too by the way ;-))

Oh - I missed a lot of your photos - too bad.
We have it the same about taking portrait - I would like to, but its not that easy where I live, unless with canded camera, but that not my style.

You did a very good job with this portrait. The light/shadow and DOF works very well on my sceeen and the person surely a good motif - Thanks for sharing Henry.

Nice and interesting portrait. Great DOF and colors. I think a bit more space at the left would have worked well as well a small de-saturation of the colors at the back.
