Photographer’s Note

At the Batavia yard they're making a replica of a 17th century warship 'De zeven provinciën'. This picture is made close down to the keel. So imagine the waterline will be more or less in the top of the picture and above that the rest of the ship will be built. I made it because of all the lines. In fact the poles just help to get the shape of the ship and holding the so-called erecting frames.

The following text is from the site of the Batavia Yard.

The "7 Provinciën" : eighty gun Ship of the Line.
The '7 Provinciën' (i.e. Seven Provinces, since the Dutch Republic in the 17th century consisted of seven rather independant lands) was originally built in 1664-'65 for the Admiralty of the Meuse in Rotterdam, by Master Shipbuilder Salomon Jansz van den Tempel. The ship participated in all major naval combat between 1666 and 1692, like the Twoday's and Fourday's battles at North Foreland (1666); the Raids on Chatham and Harwich (1667), the Battles of Solebay, Schooneveld and Kijkduin (1672/1673) and, finally, the Battle of la Hougue (1692).
From 1666 tot 1674 the ship was the flagship of the Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, one of the most famous sea-officers the Dutch Republic had ever seen.
In 1694 the 7 Provinciën was decommissioned and sold to be broken up.

In 1995 a reconstruction of this most famous ship started on the Batavia Yard in Lelystad.
The ship is being built by a group of young people, within a training programme and will probably be finished around 2015.

If it interest you look at www.bataviawerf.nl This is the second replica they build.
