From the LP online guide to Laos:

By the end of the 18th century, most of Laos came under Siamese (Thai) suzerainty but the territory was also being pressured by Vietnam. Unable or unwilling to serve two masters, the country went to war with Siam in the 1820s. This disastrous ploy led to all three kingdoms falling under Thai control. By the late 19th century, France had established French Indochina in the Vietnamese provinces of Tonkin and Annam. The Thais eventually ceded all of Laos to the French, who were content to use the territory merely as a buffer between its colonial holdings and Siam.

from me:

throughout laos, pieces of the former french colonists remain. some french things are still very popular, especially in larger towns like vientiane and here in luang prabang. buildings such as this one are scattered around, but it is not uncommon to see an old man pushing around a cart of fresh baguettes! you can also get some awesome omlettes to go with the bread too.. great first thing in the morning. mmm...

Hi, Craig.

I always admired colonist architecture, the will of people to carry their culture accross the world through the means of architecture.
Fine shot, looks like a mediteranesan if you don't read the note.

i agree with aleksander that this building has quite a european feel. i love the white and blue dominating the shot. it's very cool and relaxing. good shot.

Hi Craig,
A good example of old colonial architecture. I like colours, even though I’d try to lower the contrast a little. It is a pity you did not include more of the foreground, which was probably more interesting than the plain blue sky. I appreciate the informative note.
