Photographer’s Note

Lake Marian, in New Zealand's Fiordland National Park, is one of the more spectacular places that can be reached in a day walk from the main road to Milford Sound. It is a small lake set at the head of a glacial valley, surrounded by ice-clad cliffs. The track to the lake is mainly through temperate rainforest, but just before the lake is reached, the magnificent alpine scenery suddenly appears. A plume of snow is blowing off the top of Mount Crosscut at the left.

Track notes say the return journey is 3 hours, but you can easily make a full day of it by exploring the lake shore, looking at plants, rocks and scenery, taking photos, and simply enjoying being there.

A polarising filter was used. The image was scanned from a slide.
