Cool Surfer, a photo from California, West

Photographer's Note

California Street has long been a favorite of mine, since I used to surf a Pacific Catamaran daysailor there in 1964. I was quite suprised to see about 5 of these young ladies surfing without wetsuits, since all the guys were wearing them! I surmized that the girls couldn't afford the wetsuits, but some people I know expressed the opinion that they were more concerned about how they appeared in a bikini. It seemedto me that the ladies were all in quite well established relationships within the group, so I am not sure that a display of physical attractiveness would have been high on their priority list, however, it did make for a more intresting photo with which to catch attention.

Hi Larry,
You've captured good light, color and detail in your well-framed compo; the tip of the board out of the water, the surfer balancing in front of the translucent wave. I think what this teaches us about the world is that women are still way too concerned about physical appearance. The only thing I see changing is that some men have caught the bug. Certainly in animals and in other times, males used physical appearance for attraction.

I'd rather see a woman in a bikini surfing than a surfer dude anyday. Nice shot Larry!

Hi Larry, Good capture here, she needs to keep that nose down though (board's nose). Make a change from the hip superfit guys we see in most surf photos. As kids we surfed waves like this at Oakura Beach, New Zealand. The waves look so-so, but still a lot of fun and keeps you fit. I like the note you have placed here also for context. TFS. Murray.

I love the nose of the board up, the glow of the sun on her nice tanned body, and the color of the water with the sun shining through, well done. Up here on the Oregon Coast everyone has either wet suits or dry suits, girls and boys...brrr...
