"What in the world are you taking pictures of?" he pondered as I kept on snapping shots over his head while we rested by the river. He looked around and couldn't really understand what was so interesting about the area.

For one, the landscape was absolutely stunning, the Gweeberra river (North-West IE) slowly pushing down into the Atlantic Ocean, the gentle hills of the Rosses beginning to roll ahead of us and the low sun lighting up the water and sky.

Secondly, and perhaps more amazingly, the river was copper brown.
Never in my Life had I seen such color in naturally flowing water.
It seemed clean and clear, yet almost orange.
The sand, that would normally rest below water as the high-tide would roll in, was shaped like tightly curled hair; the calm yet deep water lay besides it changing from bright orange to dark brown as it gathered mass; the sky reflected on the river's calm yet current-driven surface.
All of it seemed like a Perfect setting on this unexpectedly warm day. And what would one expect of me, if not take a whole load of pictures during this once in a lifetime moment?

Apparently this plentiful 20 mile-long (32 km) fishing river that runs down from Loch Barra is extremely rich in iron. My travel companion couldn't give me a clear explanation as to the reason behind it, and after having spent about an hour trying to figure out which town I should mark as this picture's place of capture, I am not going to shed any light on the matter either...
If you happen to know more about it, all information is more than welcome :D

I fixed the contrast a little on the original version, and then replayed around with it and brightness/levels to make it more truthful to what I saw that day in photoshop's 'save for web' version.

Excellent image, quite abstract yet as you say it's a naturally occurring colour in the water (I've seen similar things elsewhere). The composition is very good, with areas of different colours (sand & reflected sky as well as the river). Great note too!

Wow, a really great photograph.. you should have more positive feedback for this shot! :) I really love the way it goes from looking like a black & white corner to a rainbow, and then back again to an abstract sky reflection.. two thumbs up! Regards, Doug

This combination of colours looks amazing. Fantastic

Great colours and very abstract - took me a good few seconds to realize what I was looking at, and from which perspective. Well spotted!

Hi Julia, a very good compo with great colors coming out of this picture..well done...

Hi Julia,
that's an amazing place and picture indeed! I like the colours, composition and reflection of the sky in the water. And a very informative note.
Thanks for sharing.

What an interesting photo, it looks almost like some strange landscape vista. The sand is weird and beautifully defined and the odd colour of the water is very well captured. The reflection of the clouds is stupendous. A really top photo and excellent notes, thanks!
Regards,
Andrew

Hello.
First this is the graphism and the colors of this one which catched my eye, and I came to this part of your gallery without any idea about what it was. After that I was really seduced by the way you composed this picture and by its characteristic textures and reflections.
This color exists in other rivers and lakes in Ireland, and I thought it was due to the strong amount of organic matter in suspension in the water, rather than to a concentration of iron (but I was maybe wrong...)
Anyway, congratulations for this amazing picture and for your whole album.
Thanks for sharing.

Bonsoir Julia,

Amicalement
JMarc

Hi Julia - at first I didn't know what to make of the thumbnail, but I'm glad I opened it, the textures of the sand blending into the dark water makes a dreamy effect, the reflected clouds are a bonus.
