Photographer’s Note

We went by the little yellow train from Villefranche-de-Conflent to Odeillo Via. Tre route is very interesting - many viaducs, tunnels and incredible views.
Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the Train Jaune railway line was intended to connect the high Catalan plateaux with the rest of the "département".
Work first started in 1903 and by 1910 progressed as far as linking Villefranche to Mont Louis.
The line was only finally completed in 1927, by reaching Latour de Carol, and it still follows its original route in a very uneven environment.

Le petit train jaune parcours avec lourdeur le paysage des montagnes pyrénéennes. Reliant les gares de Villefranche de Conflent à celle de Latour, distantes de 63 kilomètres, la motrice électrique régale les vacanciers de la région. Vous découvrirez de merveilleuses vues, à bord d'un petit train vraiment pas comme les autres. La ligne fût ouverte en 1903 et le moins que l'on puisse dire, c'est que sa construction ne fût pas évidente. En effet, il fallut bâtir de nombreux ouvrages afin d'élaborer un tracé régulier.
Il suffit de découvrir la ligne en chiffres afin de s'en rendre mieux compte :
- 310 courbes de ligne
- de 427 à 1231 mètres d’altitude
- 650 ouvrages d'art dont 17 tunnels de 56 à 380 mètres, 14 viaducs et 4 ponts voutés
- gare de Bolquere : la plus haute de France, culminant à 1593 mètres.

Très original avec ce train qui se reflète dans sa propre vitre. Bel effet. L'incorporation de ces nuages noirs dans la photo a bien arrangé l'ensemble.

Great colour and clarity considering the contortions necessary to take this without losing at least your camera if not your head. Brooding clouds make all the difference.

Jedno z twoich ciekawszych zdjec Janie. Bardzo dobry pomysl z tym odbiciem. Do tego fajny i romatyczny motyw. Widze ze duzo przegapilem we Francji podrozujac tylko TGV. Natomiast mam podobne zdjecia w albumie ze Szwajcarii i podrozy pociagiem przez Alpy. Uwielbiam pociagi. Samoloty to juz nie to samo..gdzie ten romantyzm?

witaj Jan,swietna perspektywa, musiales się niezle wychylic chyba do tego ujecia:-), ten podzial kadru i odbicie same w sobie wygladaja idealnei dopracowwane a żolty kolor dodatkowo przyciaga uwagę. od kilku dni chodzi mi po glowie piosenka "wsiasc do pociągu byle jakiego..." i choc wsiadam do nich prawie codziennie to ten jest podwojnie pociagajacy, bo jak sie przyjrzysz, mozna pojechac w dwoch kierunkach naraz...

This has to be one of the most expressive photos I've seen on this site. There is so much in it. The dark threatening sky, the curature of the train as it moves forward, the haunting reflection in the largest, nearest window. I really do like this. Thanks for this.

I have not taken this train myself even with all the times I visit or pass Villefrance de Conflent. But as seen here it must be as good as doing it ;-)
